The history of coffee in Oneonta, New York dates back to the early 1800s. The first Dutch settlers in the area were farmers who grew corn and wheat. In 1818, they started a small mill on the river near present-day Oneonta. By 1830, the mill had produced about fifty sacks of coffee per day. In 1835, two men from Holland came to the area and started a business brewing coffee. They named their company "The Dutch Coffee House" and sold coffee through local stores. The first store was located on Main Street in Oneonta. In 1840, another store was opened on Broadway in Oneonta. This store became one of the most popular in town because it had a large grocery section with items such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs, bacon, cheese and other goods. By 1850, there were three stores operating in Oneonta: "The Dutch Coffee House," "The American Coffee House" (later known as The Olde World Cafe) and "Brewer's Brewery." These stores served up to five hundred people each day during peak hours. The population of Oneonta gradually dwindled over time due to various factors such as transportation technology making it easier for farmers to sell their crops afar from town and increased competition from neighboring towns that developed more commerce based on industry rather than agriculture. However, some residents did continue to support their businesses even when things were tough by buying goods from these businesses or giving them tips for good customer service However slowly but surely over time those resident began leaving for jobs elsewhere or simply moved away altogether as technology advanced which made it easier for manufacturers like Starbucks to start opening up shop throughout America As time went on many of these businesses closed down including "Brewer's Brewery" which stopped producing coffee in 1975 while still keeping its doors open for customers looking for refreshments It is now used as an event space

Coffee beans were brought to America from Europe by sea and then bought by ship captains who would transport them overland to Oneonta for roasting. The first commercial office of a coffee roaster was opened in Oneonta on December 5, 1827. In 1839, Elijah Demarest founded the Demarest Coffee Company which became one of the largest coffee companies in the world.

The first settler in Oneonta was Isaac Morse who arrived in 1785. He and his family were followed by John Morse and his wife Sarah on July 16, 1786. In 1814, James White settled here with his family and began to grow corn for export to Albany and other markets. In 1828, Oneonta became a part of what is now Fulton County; its first postmaster was Elijah Prentice. In 1851, Averill Forbes bought land here from James White and built the present courthouse which he named after himself (forbes being one of the original settlers). The town saw several notable events during the American Civil War including three days of fighting in October 1861 when Union forces attacked Two Forks Ferry while supplies were being transported across the river to Fort Erie; Two Forks Ferry was captured by Confederate troops soon afterward and this event helped spur development within Oneonta towards becoming an important strategic center for battle operations on both sides of the war. In 1865-1866 Oneonta's school board established a free public school that served all residents regardless of wealth or coloration (this system continued until 1971). After Reconstruction came to America following the American Civil War there were waves of black migration from southern states into northern cities such as New York City thanks to new social programs championed by President Abraham Lincoln which allowed freed African Americans access to education opportunities denied them before emancipation occurred - many people living within Oneonta took up farming as their primary occupation because they could not find jobs elsewhere after emancipation ended. In 1900 it had a population of 1,468 and achieved its current size with the arrival of the railroad in 1907. Oneonta is home to one stop on Amtrak's "New Rochelle" Line which runs from Buffalo to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre via White Plains Junction and then northeast to Syracuse/Albany through one stop at Cohoes Junction before continuing south to Oswego/Aurora; as well as two other stops at Auburn (the first station on this line) and Rome (the last).
