The town was established by colonists from what is now Ontario in 1778, and grew rapidly after they began to settle the area. During this time period there were also several major events that affected Oneontan residents: 1) The American Revolution: In 1775, British forces sacked Eight Mile Bridge near Onondaga Creek while seeking refuge from American General George Washington's army; this event helped lead to increased hostilities between Great Britain and America throughout much of North America (the Revolutionary War). 2) The Treaty of Paris: Aftermath of the Revolutionary War led to signifying peace among all participating nations; this event led to increased trade between America and Europe (the Treaty of Paris). 3) The Erie Canal: Completed following many hard struggles over funding (the Erie Canal was part Of John F Kennedy's successful presidential campaign), construction began on what would become one of North America's longest canal systems; within 10 years it had opened up new markets for goods across eastern Canada and western Mexico (the Erie Canal revolutionized transportation). 4) Immigration: Prior to 1840 there were only 2 or 3 white settlers living permanently in Oneontan; by 1850 there were over 1000 residents living here permanently (immigrant populations continued to grow through many waves until 1960). In 1818 Nicholas Tookey Sr.'s store received a license from Town Board #1 which allowed him to sell whiskey without having his business licensed elsewhere within the village limits – making him one of very few entrepreneurs at that time who operated outside traditional limitations set by society/government."
