Oneonta, New York is a small town located in Ulster County, New York. The population was 1,799 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Oneonta was James Bryant who arrived in 1786. He and his wife were the only white people to live in Oneonta for over twenty years. In 1810, John Cramer set up a mill on the west side of Main Street and named it after himself - Cramer's Mill. The stream running through one side of town got its name from this mill - Oneonta River. In 1827, Arent Van De Weyden bought land east of Main Street from James Bryant for $2 per acre. This land became known as Van De Weyden's Farmstead and remains so today. The first school in Oneonta was built on this farmstead in 1830 by Mrs. Fenton and Mr. Barnes (later Mrs. Van De Weyden). In 1840, Elijah Hicks moved to Oneonta from Whitestone on Long Island and opened the first store here with what little money he had left over after being expelled from college for financial irregularities In 1845, Jephson Morse opened a grocery store at 7 Elmira Road which became very successful until 1850 when Morse moved to Rochester due to competition from that city's new grocery stores . After moving back to Rochester , Morse started another store which stood near where he currently stands - now known as Morse’s Drug Store . With all these businesses open in Oneonta during this time period there must have been quite a demand for groceries here! It wasn't until 1870 when railroad service arrived that business really picked up around here; this resulted in more people coming into town and making it easier for locals to get their goods they need without having to go far away like they had before! During this time also some interesting events happened; such as when General George Armstrong Custer occurred while living hereabouts during his military service; or when Buffalo Bill came through ONEONTA on his show “Buffalo Bill's Western World” Several other famous individuals passed through ONEONTA during these years including Henry Ford who lived next door on Elmira Road at 205 Bridgeport Ave., PFC John Lappin USMC who served with distinction at Iwo Jima & Okinawa Castle Airbase etc.; but my favorite story would have to be the day Earl Warren delivered an address HERE about how important it was that America maintain good relations with Great Britain! Needless to say everyone enjoyed themselves tremendously despite some rather heated words being used!
