Oneonta, New York is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Oneonta was made in 1792 by two brothers named Green and Schultze. The first store on Main Street opened in 1805 and was run by the Green family until 1831 when it passed to John Crouse. In 1842 Jno. Haggerty started a grocery store on Main Street which became one of the most successful businesses in Oneonta. Haggerty's died suddenly in 1888 and his store passed to his son John Haggerty Jr., who continued the business until 1905 when it merged with Powers' Grocery Company to form Powers & Haggerty Incorporated. The original building still stands there today as part of the Powers School District No. 1 administrative headquarters building located at 15 East Main Street next door to Riverbend Bank (now Wells Fargo). In 1865 Oneonta had its own post office but this ceased operations after only three years due to lack of mail service from Utica, then under military occupation during the Civil War. In 1876 one branch of Sears Roebuck & Co.'s catalogue distributes through local merchants; this service continued until 1978 when Sears pulled out of town because of competition from larger malls closer to their home markets eastern USA and Canada - an event that left Oneonta without any major department stores for over 25 years!
