Oneonta was founded in 1795 as a farming village on the Niagara River. The town became a node of industry and commerce after it was incorporated as an unincorporated community in 1852. Oneonta's rise to prominence began with its involvement in the early Erie Canal construction project, which brought economic opportunity and growth to the community. In addition, Oneonta played a key role during America's industrial Revolution, becoming one of the first communities to adopt industrial policies and engage in marketinged development. After experiencing significant economic decline during World War II, Oneonta regained some prosperity through various redevelopment projects and new investments. Today, Oneonta is considered an important center for coffee culture and commerce within New York State.
Oneonta, New York is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The village of Oneonta was established in 1836 by settlers from Oneonta, Ontario. The first post office in Oneonta opened in 1840. The name was derived from Iroquois word "onion" which means "potato." In 1859 the town became a city and had its own police department until it merged with Buffalo on January 1, 1898. On July 16th of that year Oneonta lost its charter as an incorporated city and reverted to being a unincorporated community governed by a board of directors with five members appointed by the mayor and three member appointed by the City Council. On May 25th, 2006 Oneonta celebrated its 350th anniversary! During this event many local businesses displaying antique goods donated items for display in downtown Plaza Park including some original architecture from when Oneonta was founded

Oneonta is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a rich history that can be found from its earliest days when it was one of five settlements in what is now Erie County. The first settler in Oneonta was Nicholas Schuyler who arrived there on October 8, 1795. He and his family were the first white people to live in what is now Oneonta Township. In 1814, another group of settlers arrived and named their town after General John Sullivan’s brigade which had fought against Native American warriors at Battle of Ballston Spa near Onondaga Lake. General John Sullivan’s brigade also included Andrew Henry’s company (now Unicoi) which helpedraid and burn down the village of Seneca where they were stationed while supplies were being acquired for the war effort. In 1863, Oneonta became an incorporated town under the name of Montrose. It changed its name again to Oneonta in 1875 when it annexed part of neighboring townships including Addison and Romeville as well as parts of Canandaigua and Darien Lakes – giving it its current name as a result of annexation by Oneonta Township on February 6, 1898. On July 1st, 1938 Two Rivers post office opened with mail from Utica via Farmington Hills but closed due to lack of customers; Two Rivers ZIP code 91701 served as the municipal mailing address until 1974 when that ZIP code was reassigned to Canandaigua after Utica became suburbanized adjacent to Buffalo
