The Oneonta Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment has been deployed to Afghanistan for the past two years. The unit has served as a garrison unit in the southern province of Kandahar and is now stationed in the city of Musa Qala. In 1814, Nicholas Hixon donated some acres along the creek for public use which eventually became known as Hixon Park today. According to the 2010 US Census Bureau estimate, 2% of all households were below poverty level; 5% of families were below average income; 3% had no vehicles; 8% were single parents with children under age 18 living alone; 9% were married couples with children under age 18 living together; 15% had no husband present working full time outside the home; 25% reported having earned income above $75 per week on average while employed full time outside the home during calendar year 2009

The area now comprising Oneonta was annexed by Syracuse in 1801. It remained an unincorporated village until it was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1853. On October 15, 1865, Oneonta became the capital of New York State after its secession from the Union. The population of Oneonta reached 21,000 by 1890; it declined to 10,700 by 1920. In 1930, much of the original town line were restored and reopened as a shopping district called "The Square" downtown. Oneonta is a town in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Oneonta is part of the Rochester–Onondaga County, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Oneonta was Nicholas Seamounts, who arrived on July 11, 1718 from Pemaquid Cove on Long Island. He named his land Poston Pond after President John Adams. In 1727, Peter Schuyler founded Schuyler'stown on what is now Main Street in Oneonta and built a mill there which still stands today. In 1730-1732, Nicholas de Witt founded De Witt's Town on present day Spring Hill Road near where the Seneca Nation Reservation now stands. In 1815, Oneonta became a village when it merged with neighboring Rochester to form one consolidated municipality called Onondaga County. Prior to this time, each community had its own governing body and ordinances were passed by individual towns meetings without any overall control or coordination among them. In 1825-1826, Onondaga County changed its name to Monroe County and reorganized its government into an elected county board with three members per township (instead of five). This change also increased political power for the countywide electorate and led to tension between villages over representation in county government (and eventually merger into larger communities). In 1830-1831 Monroe County erected two granite markers to commemorate these years: one at the entrance of Oneonta Village Green and another at Salmon Brook Park near where Third Street intersects State Highway 27 today. On December 12th 1835 – just days before the American Civil War began – Indian Wars veteran General Lew Wallace came into Onondaga County from Oswego Lake searching for supplies and discovered that both sides were storing munitions here along with food for their troops east of Syracuse; he immediately ordered all stores and homes confiscated as war unfolded potential targets for attack by Confederate forces should their home countries become involved in hostilities within weeks (). Two days later his orders were followed up by Militia General Nathaniel Lyon who burned most of what remained of De Witt’s storefront within one mile radius around town center following an unprovoked attack against militia units loyal to Wallace (). Between 1861-1865 more than seventy Five buildings located throughout Onondaga Counties were destroyed during construction/destruction campaigns associated with Castlereagh’s Union Army campaign against Buffalo Soldiers under General George Armstrong Custer () During World War II many mills closed due to lack of demand but some reopened after hostilities ended due to new technology including plastics production which took place nearby while factories closed elsewhere in the Empire state; however only Three out 10 families living within 5 miles radius had access to these jobs] The population peaked at 624 in 1960 but has declined steadily since then reaching 448 as of 2010
