Oneida is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ontario and Erie counties. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-Onondaga County, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oneida's economy depends largely upon agriculture and manufacturing. The first white people to arrive in what is now Oneida were Dutch settlers in 1614. In 1807, one of General George Washington's army officers, Cornelius Vanderbilt, purchased over 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land in what is now Oneida from the Mohawk Nation for $5 an acre. He named it "Nelson". The town was founded by pioneer farmers David Ferris and Solomon Welles on July 8, 1825 as a stop on their way to sell hay to the local cattle ranchers. By 1830, Oneida had a Presbyterian church and school as well as a post office with six mail clerks working out of three stores run by Ferris and Welles. A sawmill soon followed which produced lumber for building homes and other industry until 1916 when it closed due to World War I restrictions on wood production; however, two later mills opened that continued until they too closed in 2006 because of declines in demand for wood products among Americans overall since then. In 1836 Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry Expedition visited Oneida while invading Canada; he noted that "the village has no visible sign of its being occupied by humans." Development accelerated rapidly after this visit with new construction such as roads but also many conversions/updates to Indian houses including those built by early Mormon settlers who came through Oneida during the 1840s following Missouri River gold discoveries near present day Ottawa County Ohio (now Aurora). The influx helped create more than 2 square miles (4 km²) within one year! Most importantly however was increased trade with neighboring towns along Lake Ontario providing basic goods like flour for groceries purposes not available here previously or even affordable enough at that time especially given high prices prevailing throughout much of Canada at that time ($0 per bushel back then!). This made possible essential services here like plumbing including hot water which otherwise would have been impossible or very costly to provide without outside supplies coming into town which raised eyebrows back then! Oneida is a small town in upstate New York, on the border of Ontario and Erie counties. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of Oneida County. The first permanent settler in Oneida was Nicholas Canfield in 1786. He named his community after one of his ancestors, Oneida Creek near Utica, New York. In 1802, John Stephenson erected the first gristmill on the west side of Oneida Creek. A post office was established at Oneida in 1811, and remained open until it closed in 1907. In 1818, a school for children was built by Reverend James Mclntyre on land donated by Ebenezer Morse and others. The first teacher was Colesborough Dodge who taught from 1819 to 1830; he also served as chorister at First Presbyterian Church from 1827 to 1830. The village became a county seat in 1850 when Chemung County was created from parts of Ontario and Erie counties; it retained this status until 1915 when it merged with Clinton County to form Niagara County. In 1860, George Herrick opened the first hotel in Oneida; it continued operation until 1914. In 1870–71 Daniel Webster campaigned against a proposed railroad through Oneida; he said that "a great many families would be destroyed" if the line were built through their town center. In 1896–97 an unsuccessful campaign to rename Oneida "Dover" succeeded after local residents lobbied successfully for the change unsuccessfully for years preceding that year's vote cycle among all Upper Hudson Valley towns (see Dover name change controversy). OneIDA Hospital opened its doors on October 15th 1955 as Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital which continues today as University Hospitals Buffalo (UHB) Rochester Medical Center with over 2 million patients treated annually across eight core medical campuses which serve more than 190 hospitals including Weill Cornell Medical College/ Elmira Psychiatric Institute & SUNY Downstate University School Of Medicine both located within one campus!

The county was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne, who had come to America in 1784 as a lieutenant colonel in the British army and had fought against the French and Native Americans at Quebec City and Fort Niagara.
