Oneida is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Oneida is part of the Syracuse–Onondaga, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1788 by Loyalists who had fled British Invasion. The early mills and churches were built on the east side of the Oswego River, which separated Oneida from what is now West Seneca County. In 1814 Oneida became a town when it merged with other towns in Onondaga County to form the new Town of Onondaga. In 1847 Oneida lost its status as a town when it was annexed by Syracuse City. In 1898 Oneida amalgamated with neighboring towns to form the new city of Syracuse and remain an unincorporated community today. The history of Oneida can be traced back to 1788 when Loyalist refugees fleeing British Invasion founded a small farming village on the east side of the Oswego River near present-day downtown Syracuse. This settlement grew quickly due to its location and access to water resources; soon enough, Three Rivers Township (later called Clinton Township) was created within Oneidas boundaries for landowning farmers and others who contributed financially or physically to Its growth. By 1800 there were over 100 settlers living in Three Rivers Township - most of whom were farmers who raised livestock or raised crops for local markets; some also engaged in manufacturing or trade activities such as tanning hides or dyeing cloths for export overseas."
