Olean, New York is a small town located in Mohawk County, New York. Olean was founded by Loyalists in 1795. The population of Olean was 1,927 at the 2000 census. The name "Olean" is derived from the Oneida word Ohi-nuhk (“the well-watered place”). The earliest settlements in what is now Mohawk County were made near the confluence of the Chenango and Delaware Rivers. These early pioneers hunted game and gathered nuts and potatoes for food. In 1795, when British forces invaded America to reduce the American Revolution, many Loyalists fled to Canada with their families. A few families decided to stay behind and found a village on an upland called Ohinagaonaghi (Now known as Olean). The first settler in this new community was John Prentice. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Patriot militia under Captain David Greene burned down part of Ohinagaonaghi while settlers were inside their homes. This event created a lasting bitterness between Patriots and Loyalists which still exists today. In 1814, General Philip Schuyler ordered Major James Wilkinson to move 350 men from Albany into what is now Mohawk County in order to rebuild Fort Orange after its destruction during the Battle of Saratoga. Many residents of Ohinagaonaghi came overland with their horses and wagons to join Wilkinson's column; however, they arrived too late for Oriskany Battlefield where Federal General George Washington's army fought against Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Mercer's British brigade on September 15th, 1814. Some people who had come overland also died from poor accommodations or disease as they traveled through cold winter weather into what is now upstate New York . In 1830, when Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which allowed white Americans living on reservations in Indian Territory to purchase land east of the Mississippi River for $3 per acre (this act led to mass migration across Native American reservations throughout western North America ). After much debate among legislators about how best to deal with these troublesome Indians , President Andrew Jackson signed Executive Order No.–5221 on February 9th,, 1830 which authorized Ulysses S Grant–then Secretary at War–to buy surplus lands west of Arkansas River for $10 per acre . On April 12th , 1830 , Grant approved his predecessor's recommendation that no more than twenty acres be purchased per family ; however Grants' directive resulted in 400 miles (640 km) being surveyed within present-day Mohawk County alone . By July 1830 only 2½ miles (.4 km) had been sold off – including 3½ miles (.8 km) along Lake Ontario shoreline – making it difficult for settlers seeking land east of Lake Ontario . However Grants had successfully managed Toomey Creek valley by purchasing 640 acres (.24 ha) therefrom; so by December 8th he recommended that all remaining land be tried out for sale before any final decisions could be made about purchases . It took until 1865 for all open land within present dayMohawk County ()to be sold2½miles(4km)longer than designated (). Only then did settlers begin moving onto their properties … mostly women accompanying their husbands or children because most males were fighting in our country’s wars abroad

In 1784, the village of Olean was founded by two Dutch farmers, Hendrick and Jannetje Gouda. The village quickly grew and became a center for trade and commerce. In 1804, the Village of Olean was annexed by the City of Syracuse. In 1824, the city purchased the land around Olean from the Goudas. The city soon began to increase its population in response to new opportunities in town. By 1830, the population of Olean had reached 1,100 people. By 1840, Olean's population had grown to 2,500 people. The growth of Syracuse led to increased pressure on the struggling villages nearby. On July 30th, 1846, Mayor Cornelius Vanderbilt announced that he would donate all of his common stock inthe Syracuse Common School District to help finance a new school for children in Slippery Rock Township (now Canandaigua). This donation allowed Slippery Rock Township to build its first school without having to seek approval from either New York City or Syracuse! In 1870-71 Arsenault & Nephew built a large frame building on Court Street which served as both public library and post office until it burned down in 1951. It is now known as "Arsenault House" and is home to the former Borough President's Office which housed many offices during Borough government including an assessor general's office (1893-1895), planning commission (1901-1902), education commissioner (1910-1920), public health inspector (1922-1945) and housing authority administrator/manager (1970-1981).
