Olean Village was founded in 1828 by men who were looking for a place to raise their families. The Olean Post, the first newspaper in the village, was published from a small frame building on Main Street. In 1830, the village became an incorporated town and had its first meeting The town developed around two railroad lines that passed through it - one running north to Buffalo and one running south to Albany. The town's population rapidly grew as people came to work on the railways. By 1847, Olean had a post office, schoolhouse, store, and two churches. During the early 1800s, Iroquois Indians lived in what is now Olean Village. In 1829, Ulysses S. Grant visited Olean and praised its defenses against Indian attacks. He also noted that there were no white settlements in the area at that time. This helped make Olean an attractive location for new settlers - many of whom arrived during the Fraser Rebellion of 1849-1851 which sought independence for Canada from Great Britain
Olean was first settled in 1792 by the Olean family, who were pioneers in the construction of canals and other water-based infrastructure. The town was originally known as "Holland Patent" after one of its founders, Nicholas Hollander. In 1812, when New York state was formed, Holland Patent became part of Albany County. In 1814, the county seat moved from Holland Patent to Oswego County due to population growth in that area. In 1834, Albany County split into two parts – One part became Rensselaer County and the other part became Monroe County. Olean remained a part of Monroe County until it was merged into Erie County in 1898. Since 1898, Olean has had three different mayors – Harry Fenton (1908-1911), James J. Ryan (1991-1993), and Josephine Kopp (2002-2004). On December 12th, 2018 Mayor Kopp resigned effective immediately due to health reasons
