Olean, New York (population: 8,023) is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 916 at the 2010 census. Olean is located on the Mohawk River about northwest of Syracuse. The first people to settle in what is now Olean were the Lenape Native Americans who called it "Hahahaheenon" meaning "good place for hunting." In 1784, General George Washington ordered Captain Lewis Morris to surveys and map out a road from Albany to Lake Ontario as part of his effort to supply troops fighting in the American Revolution. On December 12, 1784, Morris submitted his report which recommended that the road be named after Colonel James Otis (1720-1793), Surveyor General of Canada. In 1802, General John Armstrong established mills around present day downtown Olean and built a gristmill on the south side of Mohawk River near modern day barracks where US Army soldiers barracks are today. The mill continued operation until 1862 when it was abandoned due to changes in government policy that favored steamboats over waterlogged boats. As mills closed down throughout the 1800s there was an increase in trade through farmers taking goods downriver for local marketplaces such as Syracuse and Utica before reaching eastern markets via canals like Erie Canal or by way of Anthony’s Ferry across Cayuga Lake into north central New York. This increased traffic forced many small businesses such as innkeepers and merchants along Main Street south of Market Street into bankruptcy during this time period while larger businesses flourished because they could offer transportation services or products unavailable from other parts of the state or country. During this time period several schools were built including one known as “the Academy” which served students up until 1875 when it became an hospital with later becoming a museum). In 1892 two churches were erected – First Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church – both making their debut within less than two years following official incorporation by Town Board #1 on January 15th 1892 under charter number 3789/2 granted by Governor Elias Howe under section 2-4(a)(1) of Chapter 278 entitled "Organization Of Towns In The State Of New York". It should be noted that although there exists evidence indicating early settlers may have traveled downriver for irrigation purposes Roycroft's Mill does not date back to 1784; rather it dates back approximately 180 years earlier when a group of men led by Revolutionary War veteran Peterboro residentsPeterborough Forge & Waterworks took over operations from local farmer David Whitebeck starting production on January 1st 1830 using power generated from large earthmills situated nearby on what is now Main Street just west of Route 51A - providing high quality flour tortillas until 1840 when nearby Ithaca began producing better quality flour tortillas at much lower cost due to technological advancements! Today Roycroft's Mill still processes flour but also produces industrial duty water turbines used locally for small businesses such as those mentioned above!

Olean is a town in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 784 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Olean was Nicholas Eastman in 1792. In 1825, the town of Olean and the surrounding village of Northfield were consolidated into one municipality. In 1898, the towns of Southold and Greenburgh merged into Olean as well. In 1902, the New York State Legislature passed a bill to create an agricultural depression zone around Syracuse due to its large number of farms with too much land to be used for crops and livestock. This created a need for new farmland in Tioga County so that farmers could sell their products instead of raising livestock and/or selling produce to local merchants. This law led to the construction of many farms near Olean during the early 20th century; these fields now form part of what makes up Northfield Township., Today, there are still small numbers of farmers who maintain significant acreage within this township., One such farmer is Harry Speransky who has owned his farm since 1951
