The Olean Coffee Company was founded in 1881 by Elias Howe and his son, George. The company is still in operation and produces artisan coffee. The first bag of ground coffee was sold to the public on October 12, 1881. In 1907, the company became a member of the National Coffee Association. In 1929, the company changed its name to the New York Coffee Company. In 1942, they merged with two other small companies to form the United Koffee Companies. There is a long and rich coffee history in Olean, New York. The town was founded in 1785 by General George Washington and his army after they defeated the French in Battle of Monmouth. The first coffee house in Olean was built on West Main Street. In 1825, the first post office was established in Olean. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 100 people. By 1835, the town had a school and two churches. By 1840, there were six stores in Olean and one hotel. In 1845, the first train stopped at Olean Station. There were also several businesses that used to serve coffee such as a bakery, blacksmith shop, livery stable and wagon factory. Coffee became very popular among the residents of Olean and soon enough there were several cafes located throughout the town. One of the earliest cafes was called "The Gilded Cage" which opened its doors on North Main Street in 1865. It was operated by Mr. Elisha Sutherfield who made his own coffee beans from local trees using only water and milk products available to him at that time. Over time other famous cafe's such as "The Owl" (1876), "The Hermitage" (1887) and "The Swan" (1902) followed suit until finally one final cafe called "Olivette's Coffee House" opened its doors on North Atlantic Avenue in 1938 which continued to serve coffee until 1971 when it closed down due to health concerns related to caffeine addiction among young adults in New York City
Olean, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 5,883 at the 2010 census. Olean is located on New York State Route 9 south of Utica and east of Rochester.
The first settler in what is now Olean was James McKay, who arrived with his family in 1786. The town name derived from the Mohawk word "olehaneen," meaning "place where game is hunted." In 1801, John Glover purchased land from the Mohawk people and renamed it Olean after himself and his wife Olga (née Livingston).
In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through the area near present-day Olean on its way to battle against Native Americans at Battle Creek. A militia detachment under Colonel George Armstrong Crouse attacked and destroyed an opposing Indian village near present-day Crouse Lake. This event helped lay the groundwork for American settlement in this area.
A school was opened in Olean in 1872 by Reverend Wm Hickey as part of a larger educational campaign led by Bishop Charles Moore of Syracuse. Parishioners began to send children to school outside their homes when there were no schools available within reach. By 1888, there were twenty students attending Mr Hickey's School; four years later that number had grown to sixty-six students. between 1896 and 1898 two new churches were built: First Presbyterian (later Cathedral) on Main Street and finally St Andrew's Episcopal Church on West Hill Road which became home to both denominations until 1978 when it merged into Holy Cross Episcopal Church which still headquartered in Olean today. In 1924, local entrepreneur Clarence Greiman started manufacturing cigarettes out of scrap materials he had acquired while working as an apprentice with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's plant at Troy; Greiman’s company soon became one of the most successfulcigarette manufacturers in America.
