Olean is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Olean is located in the southeast corner of Chenango County and shares borders with the towns of Rome and Auburn. The first European to visit Olean was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1494. In 1784, Captain John Stevens explored the area and named it for General James Robertson (1724-1812), who had commanded British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1814, while still a part of Albany County, Olean was annexed by Chenango County. It became an incorporated village on April 20, 1826. On November 3, 1857 it became a town when all of its parts were united under one name. On March 5th of that year it lost its right to self-government due to incorporation into Clinton county but regained this right on October 16th 1870 when it reincorporated as a town again.
The United States Air Force has a rich air force history dating back to World War II. The USAF was founded in 1947 as the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). In 1951, it was renamed the United States Air Forces in Asia (USAAFIA). On 1 October 1955, the USAF was re-established as an independent service with headquarters at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. On 15 September 1959, Headquarters USAF became operational and activated three fighter groups: The 9th Fighter Group at Beale AFB, California; The 12th Fighter Group at Eglin AFB, Florida; and The 13th Fighter Group at MacDill AFB, Florida. During its early years the USAF relied heavily on U.S. combat bombers such as Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters for strategic missions over Nazi Germany and Japan. However, during the Korean War bomber aircraft played a key role by hitting targets such as Seoul and Wonsan while fighter planes were used to support ground forces ashore with airstrikes against targets inside North Korea including Kaesong Industrial Zone which resulted in two fatalities of U.S. military personnel]. It wasn’t until after Vietnam that USAF started using jet aircraft for strategic bombing operations against Hanoi and other major cities in South Vietnams [see photo of an F-4 Phantom flying over Ho Chi Minh City]). Since its establishment within NATO member countries in 1949, the USAF has engaged in more than 50 conflicts or campaigns worldwide totaling more than 2 million airmen killed or wounded*. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the military branch of the United States federal government that provides air support for its citizens. The USAF was formed in 1947 as a merger of the Army's Air Forces and Navy's Naval Air Forces. It has since grown to include more than 120,000 personnel and operates more than 350 aircraft carriers, bombers, fighter jets, and helicopters. The USAF has been responsible for conducting various operations in support of NATO and other coalition members since 1949.
Olean, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 5,539 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by the Lenape Native Americans in 1777 and named after Olean, a village on the border of Ulster County and Chemung County in upstate New York. In 1814, it became part of Ontario county, then part of Oneida county until it was annexed by Erie County in 1922. It is now within Jefferson and Monroe counties. In 1814, when Canada gained independence from Great Britain, Olean's situation as an Indian trading post changed. Canada granted land to the Lenape for their permanent settlement; they were not allowed to return to their traditional hunting grounds east of Lake Ontario. The area around present-day Olean became known as "Lenape Land." Lenape leader sachem Moccasin negotiated with Canadian officials about trade goods that could be brought back overland from what is now Niagara Falls. He sent messengers back and forth with news about possible sites for European settlements on his reservation between Buffalo Creek (now called Seneca Creek) and the north shore of today's Oswego Lake - including present-day Olean - but no one took interest because British troops were active there at the time. In 1824, United States President James K. Polk ordered military commanders Ira Dickey and Alexander Macdonald to take control of all Indian Territory south of Iowa (the Kansas Territory) because treaties had been violated by American Indians leading to land allotments being given away without compensation or other benefits promised under those treaties. This order resulted in much violence across Indian Country as settlers attacked reservations without provocation or justification; many natives died as a result. 2 years later Congress passed an act allowing for only white men to settle in any areas newly acquired from native nations – thus ending any chance for mixed race people to develop hereabouts permanently or even temporarily.(in reality this act would open tens more miles of territory up for grabs during subsequent decades).
