He named it after his father Achilleus who had settled there some years earlier. Ogdensburgh refers to an opening on the east side of the Mohawk River where two roads crossed which later became known as streets and avenues. The village name may have originated from this location because early settlers could only transport goods by boat or raft over the river's broad bottom. In 1837, John Cushing opened up a wagon train from Buffalo to Albany carrying general merchandise along with his family and other pioneers who would soon start farming hereabouts. This set off a period of heavy industry in what would become Ogdensburg including milling flour for local breadwinners and also making artificial cranberry juice for export to Europe during prohibition times (1846-1921). Ogdensburg is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-Oneida, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Ogdensburg was Nicholas de la Motte in 1676. He named his land "New Albion." In 1785, General George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way to battle at Saratoga Springs. General Lafayette also stopped here on his route toNYC in 1786. In 1814, Alexander Mountevoy settled here and began farming cows and pigs for export to Canada. He named his farm "Mount Whitney" after Mount Whitney in California where he had been driving cattle from. By 1829, Mount Whitney had a post office and several stores. In 1834, Nathaniel Shaler started a flour mill northeast of town which continued operation until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1857–1858, John Fenton built a sawmill close to the current site of the Post Office building; this mill continued operation until 1902 when it was replaced by an electric one that still operates today In 1861–1862 Jno Lyden opened a hotel near present day Main Street which became known as the "Lyden Hotel". This hotel served as the temporary home of Union soldiers duringthe American Civil War while they were camped outside of town on White Sands Hill (now Our Lady's Catholic School). After Union troops deserted from Yankee captivity at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 they occupied Lyden's hotel until its destruction by fire two days later After Reconstruction ended in America following Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 Ogdensburg lost much of its importance as a transportation hub due to lack of available railroads east of Utica but kept its status as an important agricultural center with large fields surrounding downtown . The first telephone service arrived in Ogdensburg via wire services soon after confiscation of Telegraph lines running northward from Syracuse by Abraham Lincoln following Gettysburg Address Today Ogdensburg retains many aspects associated with its past including industry such as agriculture and manufacturing although much has changed since then including growth in nearby cities such as Syracuse
