The town of Ogdensburg, New York is located in Oswego County, about 12 miles north of the city of Buffalo. The population was 5,967 at the 2000 census. The village of Ogdensburg once served as a primary center for agricultural production and cattle ranching. Today, the town features a variety of retail businesses and cultural attractions. Ogdensburg was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Ogdensburgh and his wife Anna Maria. At first, the town was called Eldridge becauseige (a Native American word meaning "headwaters") furnished all the water to drive off the Indians who were pastoralists thereabouts. In 1827, when Nicholas died suddenly, Anna Maria took over management of the village and it continued to be known as Eldridge until 1830 when it became Ogdensburgh. In 1830-31, three partners - John Doherty Sr., James Doherty Jr., and Valentine McCormick - organized a school district which included much of what is now Erie County On January 1st 1832, under new leadership from Nicholas's widow AnnaMaria & her son Valentine McCormick (the father of President James K. Polk), the Village renamed itself Township #1 on account that there were only 7 residents in it when it formed: Mrs.AnnaMaria(Nicholas' Widow), Mr.(Valentine McCormick), 2 Children Of Mr.(Nicholas)(John Doyle Sr.), 3 Children Of Mrs.(AnnaMaria)Doyle(2 children each Of Jane Hart And Rev.(John E.)Erickson) In 1834-35 some more people moved into township #1 from surrounding villages including Canandaigua & Niagara Falls; also some buildings were erected here during this time such as churches & schools (Allanston Academy). It is interesting to note that many early settlers had Scottish roots like Valentine McCormick’s namesake (and father-in-law) who came from Lochalsh near Fort Augustus in Scotland before moving southwestward across Canada to settle in Oswego County in 1814 amidst waves OF Scotch immigrants fleeing sectarian violence IN Ireland! During his term as president starting February 15th 1865 thru April 4th 1865 Abraham Lincoln made an inflammatory speech delivered at a session held at Lockport Township Hall exposing GEOGRAPHICALLY RICH NEW YORK STATE SEMI-LYRICS AND A MASSIVE STATEMENT SAYING THAT THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY WOULD BE BEGAN BY CAREFULLY PLACED FOUR MILES SOUTHWEST OF JERSEY CITY ON THE CREEKING THAT RUNS INTO THE HEMISPHERE! This event helped stimulate political agitation throughout your great land resulting in your admission into our Union on March 16th 1870 becoming oneofthe most successful towns ever admitted into our Union! Ogdensburg, New York is a small town in central upstate New York, nestled between the Finger Lakes and Mohawk Rivers. The population was 3,840 at the 2010 census. It has been called "The Pioneer Village" for many years because of its early history as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town was first settled by German immigrants in 1784. Ogdensburg served as capital of Chenango County from 1821 to 1827 and again from 1830 to 1835. In 1865, it became part of Albany County and remaining until 1959 as an unincorporated community within that county. The first settler in what is now Ogdensburg was Nicholas Bierstadt who arrived in 1784 with his family from Germany. He founded a trading post on the south side of the river in 1788 and named it Bierstadtstown after himself and his brother-in-law Johann Friedrich Schellenberg (1748-1812). From this post, Bierstadt contributed much to early development of the village which he named after him – including founding a school and church. Apostle James Kapp brought over Methodists to start a congregation here in 1800; however, this congregation disbanded shortly thereafter due to religious differences among members. The first built structure in what is now Ogdensburg was a log cabin erected by Andrew Gregg about 1800 just east of present day Main Street; it served as the local jail during frontier days when law enforcement depended largely on horseback patrols supplemented by Indians operating from nearby hills. One group of Germans who attempted to cross into Canada several times during the late 1700s throughearly 1800s came together under one roof at this location before being driven out by Canadian forces led by General John Forbes during the Battle of Saratoga (7 October 1777).
