The first permanent settler in what is now Ogdensburg was Nicholas Pierpont (1783-1859). He and his family moved from Westchester County, New York to this area in 1811. Ogdensburg was first called "Pine Bush" because of the many pine trees that grew there. In 1814, a post office was established at Ogdensburgh by George Clinton. The name change came about because of an Indian attack on October 12th of that year when several men were killed and four others wounded after raiding a swampland near present day Pine Bush Road and Mohawk Boulevard. This attack provided impetus for new development in the area including stores and mills as well as churches and schools. By 1825, most of what is now Monroe County had been created from sections of Oswego County including parts of Ogdensburgh Township which then became part of Ogdensburgh Borough until 1889 when it became part of Monroe county In order to increase shipments coming into Rochester through Canandaigua Lake during the Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered Colonel John Armstrong to build a road from Syracuse via Lockport to Albany so goods could be brought into the city without having to go through rebel territory. On July 1st 1777- two days after Battle Of Saratoga- Armstrong's road opened up making it possible for troops trying to move supplies into Albany and other rebel strongholds east of Uniontown Landing on Lake Champlain not only easier but also faster than going via rebel territory or overland route through Tory country which would have taken weeks or even months depending on weather conditions During World War II much cargo traffic passing through Oswego Junction bypassed Utica due to wartime restrictions placed on Utica by President Franklin D Roosevelt who felt that Utica had become too important as a transportation center within New York state while Niagara Falls stood ready able to supply materials needed for war production

Ogdensburg was founded in 1824 by General George Armstrong Custer and his wife Calista Belle Platt Custer as a small trading post on the Mohawk River. This political reform movement led to increased economic opportunity for Ogdensburghians and helped spur growth throughout the late 19th century. During World War I, many soldiers from Ogdensburgh served in Europe; these men helped create a new generation of American veterans who were instrumental in helping grow postwar America. In 1933, following enactment of Social Security legislation under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ogdensburgh became one of the first towns in New York State to adopt Social Security numbers (in response to concerns that those without government-issued identification would be vulnerable to exploitation). Over time, social security enrollment has become an integral part of local culture and economy in Ogdensburgh; it has also been used as a measure of public support for local government functions such as street cleaning or school funding purposes.
