The North Tonawanda Naval Militia was formed in 1882 to provide a militia force for the town of North Tonawanda. The militia was disbanded in 1922, but it was reactivated in 1953 as part of the New York National Guard. The navy gift history begins with the creation of the navy in 1898. At that time, only two warships were authorized by Congress: the USS Constitution and USS Rhode Island. The first ship to be commissioned into the Navy, USS Constitution ( namesake ), arrived at Hampton Roads on October 26th, 1898. During World War II, there were twelve vessels authorized by Congress including two destroyers:USS Astoria (DMS-3) andUSS Wasp(LPD-9). The first destroyer to be commissioned into service during World War II was SSN 519 which arrived at Norfolk Navy Yard on September 9th, 1944. Destroyer escort duties became important during the war and so did submarines which meant that many ships had to be converted from merchant vessels into warships such asUSS Decatur(SSN 781),USSwain’s Mate’s Mate(SMSR)-class submarine HMS PEMBROKE Castle(HMS Osprey)and US Fleet Submarine Squadron 1 main battery submarine HMS COASTAL GUARDIAN . The final warship authorized by Congress for service in the Navy wasthe aircraft carrier USS Enterprisewas delivered on November 15th 1944 just weeks before Japan's surrender. After Pearl Harbor, American forces turned their attention towards Japan and began activities leading up to surrender including Operation Downfall which culminated with Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. Japanese military leaders decided against an unconditional surrender so they set out on a course to destroy all Allied installations not related directly to air or sea power while withdrawing from China which would leave Japan with no enemies left except itself! Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto realized this could not happen without an massive battle so he ordered his commanders not to engage the Allies but instead retreat through Burma until they couldiOS build new bases elsewhere than Hiroshima where they could launch another calculated attack against America!

The USS Constitution was the first American warship to be built at the shipyard in North Tonawanda, New York. It was launched on October 25, 1775 and served in the Continental Navy for over two decades. The Constitution was decommissioned on September 15, 1817 and sold to the Dutch East Indies Company. It arrived in Batavia on December 12, 1817 and served as a flagship of the Dutch East Indies Company until it was captured by British forces in 1824. The Constitution was then converted into an artillery battery and renamed HMS Hood. It served as a hulk at Portsmouth, England until it was scrapped in 1865.
The towns of North Tonawanda and South Tonawanda are located in Westchester County, New York, just north of the border with New York City. The towns date back to 1792 when both were part of the town of Sleepy Hollow. North Tonawanda was first settled by Germans in the late 1800s and became a center for coal mining. This event led to increased awareness of naval architecture around the world! In 1978, Rear Admiral David Dixon accepted an invitation from then- Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to deliver a keynote speech on maritime security issues at her government's first ever international conference on defense policy! This event led to increased awareness of maritime security issues around the world! Today, there is no doubt that the navy gift tradition continues strong!
