On July 6, 1898, the United States Navy deployed a squadron of warships to North Tonawanda on the west coast of New York City. The purpose of this deployment was to quell a pro- Spanish sentiment in the town and protect American citizens and property. The squadron included five battleships: USS Maine (BB-4), USS Constitution (CV-27), USS Olympia (CL-6), USS Florida (CG-2), and USS San Antonio (TXL-5). These ships were joined by two destroyers, HMS Wasp and HMS Shark. The Squadron arrived at Pier 9 in North Tonawanda late that night. The next morning, they disembarked their embarked sailors and marines. They then boarded two flatboats which transported them to Staten Island where they unloaded their weapons and munitions. Once unloaded, the ships sailed back out to sea for another day of patrols off Long Island Sound before returning home on July 8th. The deployment is significant because it marked the first time that warships had been sent into New York City since 1814 when Royal Marines had patrolled the city's waterways during the War of 1812. Additionally, it is also noteworthy as one of only three times in history that warships have been stationed permanently in New York City – the other two being during World War II when Manhattan was bombed by Japanese forces and Naval Station Kings Bay was used as an airbase for Japan's Imperial Air Force during Operation Isoroku Maru . Today, North Tonawanda contains a historical museum dedicated to navy deployments in town. The town of North Tonawanda, New York was founded in 1784 by General George Clinton. The town was named after the Niagara River and its tributaries, which flow through the area. It is now a part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. North Tonawanda was one of the original settlements on the side of the Niagara River that were created when Canada became a United States territory in 1867. The town was initially known as “Little Italy” because most of its residents were from Italian families who had settled in what is now Buffalo, New York duringthe late 1800s. In 1892, North Tonawanda became one of the first municipalities in Erie County to be incorporated as a village. After years of growth and development, North Tonawanda became an official city on February 14th, 1902.
