North Tonawanda is a small town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda was first settled by French Canadians in 1764 and became part of the Iroquois Confederacy in 1614. The town name originated from a Native American word meaning "north end" or "vale". In 1825 the United States built Fort Erie on the north side of Seneca Lake as part of the War for Independence. After independence, Americans began to arrive in large numbers and North Tonawanda grew rapidly. Many people who had lived there during previous times came back and established new communities nearby; this led to what is now known as "The Great Migration". Toward the end of 19th century many farmers started growing corn, potatoes and other vegetables on their farms; however, these activities stopped around 1900 due to economic reasons. In 1910 it was reported that over half a million people lived in New York City alone; however by 1920 only about 3% of all residents were living within five miles (8 km) of Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. By 1930 less than one percent of all residents were living within three miles (5 km) radius of Niagara Falls city limits . In 1950 North Tonawanda had just 2%of its population inside 550 miles (800 km) of Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area while towns such as Canandaigua and Lewiston had over 5%of their populations located within that radius
The area now known as North Tonawanda was first populated by the Lenape Native Americans. The area was part of what is now New York State until 1784, when it became part of Albany County. In 1825, the area became part of Erie County and in 1827, it became part of Niagara County. On July 15, 1860, the area was designated as a township in Niagara County by an act of the New York Legislature. On February 11, 1870, the township was renamed North Tonawanda Township after its location within the township boundaries. The population for North Tonawanda Township was 1,068 at the time it was designated. On October 25, 1840, General John Pemberton's brigade invaded Canada and overran most of Upper Canada west ofthe Great Lakes River; this event is considered to be the beginning of Canadian independence from Britain. For many years thereafter both countries claimed ownership over what is now Northwest Ontario (North Tonawanda included). Canada also claimed title to all territory east and north of Lake Ontario which lay beneath their original lands acquired during British conquest—this claim is known as "The Great Lakes Claim." Despite this claim being well-founded in law, no action taken by either country resulted in any actual physical occupation or annexation thereof...
