North Tonawanda is a village in the town of Tonawanda, Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda is located on the border of Ontario and Erie counties. The first settler in what is now North Tonawanda was Nicholas Merrill in 1814. He and his family built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the village today known as Merrill's Hill. The first school in what is now North Tonawanda was opened in 1824 by Rev. George Wernham with twelve students from France who had been brought to America for education purposes. In 1827, Drs. John Davenport and Elijah Strong established a hospital in what is now South Bracebridge Road which became the Medical School of Niagara University later that year. In 1830, Colonel John Purdy purchased land within present-day West Side Drive and erected a logging camp called "Purdy's Post" which served as an outpost for Fort Erie until 1836 when it moved to its current location on Main Street near where modern day Lake Ontario meets Interstate 80 just north of North Tonawanda High School (now North Canisius High School). On October 20th, 1840 residents of Canada raised their voices against American expansionism during a public meeting held at Fort Erie after learning about proposed Ulysses S Grant's Oregon Trail route through their county On November 8th 1840 local farmers voted to secede from New York state due to high taxes levied on agriculture whilestill being under British rule Governor James Ketchum signed an act authorizing joint military operations with Great Britain against American rebels starting on December 5th 1840 . At this time there were only five villages remaining within New York State including North Tonawanda On January 17th 1841 General Nicolas Fenton arrived with 3 companies of militia led by Lieut.-Colonel Edward Fitzgerald to take over control from Governor Ketchum Fenton laid down rules for governance including equal representation for all Indian nations within three governing councils: Chiefs Council; Native Affairs Committee; fur traders' council also presided over by chiefs council members With these councils functioning as checkers or balances within government power structure Fenton implemented policies that would eventually result in Iroquois independence proceedings being filed with the Supreme Court beginning February 6th 1845 Following this process Indian hostilities decreased but did not disappear completely as skirmishes continued between various bands across upstate New York ......................... By 1850 Indian territory encompassing present day Delaware County had reverted back under British control

North Tonawanda was first settled by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. They built a small community on the western bank of the Susquehanna River, which they called "Tonawanda". The town grew quickly, and by 1768 it had reached its current size. By 1814, the Dutch had withdrawn from New York, and North Tonawanda became part of Erie County. In 1827, it merged with what is now Niagara County to form Ontario County.
