North Tonawanda is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 6,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda is located on the southern edge of the Town of Tonawanda and it shares borders with Seneca Falls to the north and Auburn to the east. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now North Tonawanda were Dutch settlers about 1624 who named it "Tonawa", after their homeland of Holland. A small Indian village was established here by 1795 but abandoned due to white settlement encroachment and disease. In 1814, General George Armstrong Custer's Seventh Cavalry camped here while on their way from Fort Erie to Niagara Falls; some say they also stopped at this site for supplies before continuing their march upriver. In 1825, John Gouverneur Morris purchased land near present-day North Tonawanda from Chief Joseph Brant for $5 per acre (on which he built a cabin). Morris started building homes there in 1830, one being called "Casa de los Dios" (House of God). By 1840, over 200 families had moved into Morriss' community and by 1850 it had become known as North Tonawanda because all people living there were Native Americans or European immigrants descended from them. The first school in North Tonawanda was opened in 1839 by Rev. Ebenezer Higgins but closed due to lack of students; its replacement began operations in 1840 under Revs Samuel Morse and Elijah Lovejoy Jr.. In 1846 local farmers organized a militia unit called the "Tompkins Militia" to resist British occupation; this failed when British military forces arrived without warning and burned most of Morriss' community down during Battle of Fort Niagara on September 10th that year according to local legend; however locals still refers nostalgically to that battle as "the day our town went up in smoke". This skirmish helped start an American Revolution against Great Britain which would last until 1775. In 1847 local farmers again formed a militia unit called "Thompson's Rangers" which successfully resisted British occupation at Battle of Ballston Spa on October 15th although they did not achieve victory like earlier efforts; this event also helped spur further development within the town resulting in more stores opening up and more people moving into what became known as “Old North” district around Northwest corner of State Street between Cambria Avenue & Main Street – just east of today’s high school campus – starting about 1860/61 when rich farmland became available closer away from city center & services Jordan Park etc.; today’s residential area extending northwest along West State Street between Cambria Avenue & Main Streets forms mostly recent physical evidence [of] early inner-city development beginning circa 1860-1870 when many new businesses opened up including several grocery stores including Hannaford Bros., Pillsbury Bros., Lowrey’s Grocery Coasterie operated by Wm Hennigan prior thereto existing only as rumor [!]

North Tonawanda, New York is a town in western New York City, United States. The population was 27,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niagara County. North Tonawanda is bordered by the Town of Orchard on the south, Canandaigua on the north, and Seneca Falls to the east and west. The town was first settled in 1794 by German immigrants who named it "Tonawanda". The first post office opened in 1827. In 1861, when Niagara County was created from part of Erie County, North Tonawanda became its capital. From 1876 to 1919 it was also its largest city. In 1919 it merged with the neighboring towns of Canandaigua and Orchard to form what is now known as Niagara-on-the-Lake Township. In 1927, North Tonawanda joined forces with Ithaca and Rome to form a new regional government called "The Towns of Ithaca and Rome". This organization provided local services such as education, firefighting, transportation and public works while still working collaboratively with central government officials. In 1957 North Tonawanda separated from The Towns of Ithaca and Rome to become an independently incorporated municipality under the jurisdiction ofNiagara County courtrooms only; however all village meetings were held at Central High School until 1984 when they moved into their own building on Elmwood Avenue in downtown North Tonawa
NORTH Tonawanda was founded in 1786 by the Dutch. It became a part of New York State in 1800. The town had a population of about 12,000 people in 1824. North Tonawanda was renamed Northumberland in 1881. In 1898, it became part of the new city of Buffalo.
