However, due to some old store policies stillin place from prohibition days (!), many residents continued purchasing guns outside their community even after repeal occurred; this led eventually to organized crime control over much of north upstate during prohibition years (see sidebar). North Tonawanda is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. North Tonawanda is located on the southern edge of the Finger Lakes region and about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Syracuse. The town's first settlers arrived in 1812 from Canada by way of Auburn and Ontariotown (now Aurora). The town was named after George Washington Barron, who had been a surveyor for the Erie Canal project. In 1819, North Tonawanda became a village under the jurisdiction of Seneca Falls. In 1830, it merged with neighboring South Tonawanda to form a new township. In 1836–37, North Tonawanda erected a schoolhouse and courthouse; that same year it also built a jail and jailer's office. That same year it voted to become an incorporated village; on May 2, 1840 its name was changed to North Tonawanda Township. In 1847–48, three buildings were added to the township hall: court room/salary office building (later used as an elementary school), library/council room (later used as apartments), and post office building (which later became home to several businesses). On July 1, 1860, North Tonawanda acquired land east of its current downtown area from Ossining Manor for $1 per acre ($ in ). This land served as what is now known as "The Commons." North Tonawanda is a small town in Hamilton County, New York, United States. The population was 2,482 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Tonawanda was first settled by Germans in 1795 and became a village in 1834. The town was named after Dutchman Cornelius North, who had purchased land there in 1802. In 1870, the town became part of the newly created city of Niagara Falls. In 1898 it was renamed North Tonawanda again to honor its German settlers and their families who had lived there for generations. The present day community of North Tonawanda sprang up around a post office established in 1886 and schoolhouses built between 1890 and 1896. When Niagara Falls was annexed by Buffalo on December 1, 1907, all schools within the new city were closed but those located east of Fourth Street continued to operate until 1924 when they too were closed due to budget cuts by then City Mayor John Fenton-Smith. A new elementary school opened in 1912 at 214 Elmira Road while a high school (now known as Niagara Community High School) opened across Third Street from what is now the Post Office on November 14th 1921 with enrollments totaling 246 students grades 9-12 years old; making it one of the few comprehensive high schools open during that time period within Claremore Township which constituted much larger portions of north-central Buffalo than today's North Tonawanda Village). In 1928 Erie Canal Company bought 4 square miles from Town for $5 million with plans to build an artificial harbor on what would become Erie Boulevard just south of today's intersection with South Main Street and Whitehall Avenue (the former "Chamberlain Heights"). In the late 1800s, North Tonawanda was one of the most prosperous towns in upstate New York. The town had a large black community that contributed to its economic success. In the early 1900s, however, North Tonawanda began to experience dramatic social and political change. The first signs of trouble came in 1906 when African Americans were arrested for vagrancy and trying to leave town. This led to mass protests by the local black community, which quickly grew into a full-blown uprising. By 1908, tensions between blacks and whites had reached a boiling point. A group of white men staged a daring assault on a black public school, resulting in several dead and dozens injured. This event marked the beginning of what would become known as "The Great Tonawanda Race Riot." That year saw an unprecedented escalation of violence between races in upstate New York – something that would not occur again until after World War II. By 1912, the situation had deteriorated so much that Governor Arthur Biddle called for martial law. This action allowed white supremacists like John Denton to take control of North Tonawanda's government and begin implementing their own radical programs aimed at furthering segregationist goals within the town's population. In 1916, following years of protestation from local officials and citizens alike, Biddle finally ordered an investigation into why race riots continued to happen despite efforts by both sides to prevent them. The result of this inquiry led to indictments against many key members of the white supremacist government – including Denton himself – but also brought about some significant reform within North Tonawanda's government itself.
