North Tonawanda is a town in the towns of Tonawanda and North Hamburg in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now North Tonawanda were the Mohawk Indians. They built a trading post on the Chenango River in 1795. The Dutch also came to live here for a time during the early 1800s. By 1825, all of western New York had been annexed by the United States and North Tonawanda became part of Erie County. In 1828, following disputed elections that saw members from both communities vote separately for a sheriff, settlers began to arrive from Canada with land grants in hand. In 1830, local farmers formed an agricultural society known as “The First Farmers” to improve their crops and manage their land more efficiently. The society changed its name to “North Tonawanda Agricultural Society” in 1856 after becoming associated with North Tonawanda Savings Bank which was established that year. In 1865, when Niagara Falls arrived on the scene as a result of increasing tourism activity throughout upstate New York, NorthTonawa citizens banded together and purchased rights to build an overlook overlooking Niagara Gorge from original owner Daniel Haggerty for $1 million dollars (equivalent today). This event helped spur development within town and helped make it one of Erie County’s most rapidly growing areas between 1840-1960%. During this time period many talented individuals such as Augustus Kelley developed into some of our current day leaders within our community including Mayor John Kline (2007-present), Superintendent Drue Jorgensen (2006-present), President David Auerbach (2005-present) – all residents who have dedicated their lives towards making our community better place for everyone we know! In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within town boundaries with new businesses opening up along Route 810 notably Pinnacle Pizza & Pasta located adjacent to IHOP; Larken’s Ice Cream & More just off Route 22 next door; Second Hand Clothing emporium across from Walmart; numerous homes being renovated or added onto over time including several high end apartments/condos recently completed within walking distance/viewing range! In 1809, John Larkin founded a limekiln here which still operates today. During World War II, North Tonawanda played an important role as a munitions plant for the US military.
