The area now known as North Tonawanda was first settled by the Mohawk people in the late 17th century. The area became part of Erie County, New York, in 1814. In 1827, a group of farmers from Buffalo bought land in what is now North Tonawanda and began to grow coffee. The first coffee beans were roasted on July 4, 1830, by John Fenton and George Scherrer at their farm near present-day Canastota. North Tonawanda served as the capital of Erie County from 1837 to 1861. It was then renamed Cortland until it was moved to Albany in 1868. In 1865, the town became part of upstate New York and lost its status as the capital; it reverted back to its original name after Albany regained its independence in 1870. In 1898, North Tonawanda joined with other towns in western Upstate New York to form the city of Syracuse; this merger resulted in Syracuse's annexation into North Tonawandum City effective January 1, 1899. Coffee continued to be an important economic crop throughout much of this time; however, during World War II Coffee production declined due largely to shortages caused by wartime military activities. There were some brief periods where Coffee production recommenced following the end of World War II but never reached pre-war levels again In recent years there has been increased interest in Coffee cultivation and retail sales

North Tonawanda is a town in western Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of North Tonawanda was organized in 1828 from parts of the Towns of Montgomery and Niagara. It became a full townsite in 1832 when it was annexed by Syracuse.
