The Niagara Falls marine gift history goes back to the 1800s. In 1808, Captain John Smeaton of the British ship "Chesapeake" discovered a sunken French ship in the Great Lakes. As part of his salvage effort, Smeaton took on board a cargo of goods that included cannons and artillery pieces from the wars between France and England. The captain also brought along a number of marine gifts, including two cannons and four cannonballs, as well as two tugs and two boats. The items were put into storage at Fort George on the falls until 1898 when they were donated to Niagara University by Colonel Augustus DeWitt Clinton. In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicatedUSS Atlanta (C-2) at Pier 86 in downtown Niagara Falls as the first U.S. Navy Ship to be built specifically for Naval Museum purposes. USS Atlanta was constructed with maritime gifts from Canada, Japan and other countries which are now on display in her superstructure at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C.. She was used as an exhibit during World War II until she was decommissioned in 1945 and then scrapped near Buffalo, New York.
