The Newburgh Naval Shipyard has been a major naval center for many years. It was here that the United States Navy created several of its most famous warships, including the USS Constitution and USS Maine. In addition to these vessels, the NAS also produced a number of smaller boats and submarines. One of the most famous naval gifts ever given to Newburgh was in 1971 when President Nixon presented Admiral Chester Nimitz with aUSS Missouri battlecruiser as a gift. The ship had just been delivered from builder Newport News Shipbuilding and was named in honor of Commodore Nimitz' old ship, the USS Missouri.

Newburgh is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Newburgh merged with the town in 1907. The first inhabitants of what is now Newburgh were Native Americans who roamed the area for hunting and fishing purposes. A post office called "Newburgh" was established in 1801, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1805, Genesee County was formed from parts of Clinton and Niagara Counties, and Newburgh became a part of that county. In 1907, the Village of Newburgh merged with the Town of Newburgh to form a single municipality. Newburgh has been home to many famous people over its history including: George Washington Carver (1864-1943), Cornelius Vanderbilt (1849-1914), Alice Paul (1904-1975), Mayor James Mclaughlin (1993-2002) and Edwin Shultz Jr.(1965-2018).

Newburgh, New York is a town in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 12,373 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County and has a population of 20,873 as of 2019. The Town of Newburgh was incorporated on February 5, 1792 from part of the Village of Westchester and became an unincorporated township on April 14, 1814. On March 27, 1847 it became a full-time municipality with its own government and courts under a Mayor/Council system. On November 3rd, 1957 it merged with the adjacent village to form the present day city of Orange County. Newburgh formed part of the Susquehanna River valley when glaciated land reached degrees below freezing for stretches more than 200 miles (322 kilometers). In summertime melting snow filled streams that carved deep valleys through hillsides until they reach open water near where we stand today; these valleys were called "Prairies". Some say that George Washington vacationed here during his life time as did James Kappeler in 1784 while surveying for a new road from Schenectady to Albany; others believe that General George Clinton camped out near present day downtown Newburgh during his campaign for President in 1800–01 based upon evidence found at Nine Mile Creek which he crossed on horseback over objections from local farmers who wanted their land protected by federal legislation then being debated in Congress. As early as 1785 William Saratoga made an abortive attempt to establish himself as sole proprietor or governor general over all this region between Albany and Niagara Falls due to lack of support locally and political instability abroad following British military successes against France in America’s North American theater known as “The Great War”; but no permanent settlement resulted until after his death two years later when one John Sullivan arrived from Ulster Counties Ireland with 500 westbound colonial troops intent on establishing a presence along what is now I-87 but failed due to drought, famine or other problems encountered along way including Indian resistance led by Chief Wyandotte who had been living among them since about 1700 A group led by Reverend Samuel Morse established themselves at Sherburne Lake beginning constructionof what would become Oneida Lake several miles eastward along current Route 7A some 45 minutes ride east from diagonal intersection abutting Anthony Wayne Turnpike (I-87) just beyond exit 287 off I-87 within original Town limits boundaries approximately opposite alignment with first Third Street built Prior thereto appears prospectus dated December 25th 1789 showing purchase by Samuel Morse & James Wigglesworth for $3 per acre for future use lands lying southwesterly extending 1/2 mile eastward distant 2 rods northwesterly described hereinabove lot included therein Is bounded northwest by First Street South bounds SecondStreetSouth boundwest bounds ThirdStreetNorthbound
Newburgh was founded in 1696 by John Woolrich and others as the town of Newburgh on the then- deserted lands of what is now Albany. The first recorded settler was George Clinton. In 1716, the town was moved to its present location, after being granted a charter from King George II. The town's growth continued through the 18th century; during that time, it became a center for agriculture and manufacturing, with mills and tanneries being among its mainstay businesses. In 1800, Newburgh entered into an alliance with Albany in order to resist British forces marching on Albany. This alliance helped prevent Albany from falling to British military power; however, it also led to intensifying competition between the two towns. After years of skirmishes and battles, Newburgh obtained an addition to its charter from Queen Anne in 1724 which allowed it to build roads and other infrastructure necessary for its rapid growth. After becoming an incorporated municipality in 1814 (following a failed attempt by local officials to achieve this status via petition), Newburgh quickly grew into one of the most significant cities in upstate New York – serving as botha commercial center and political powerhouse due to its close proximity to Albany and its ample resources. This success continued through the 19th century; during that time, Newburgh experienced several waves of development throughout various sectors such as industry (including automotive manufacture), education (particularly post-secondary institutions), transportation (including railroad construction), and parks/resorts/spas. Throughout much of this period – even into recent times – organized crime played a major role within the cityscape: one example is how multiple murders attributed to organized crime have been committed within blocks of each other over many years, often resulting in high levels of fear and terrorizing residents within those neighborhoods.
