During these years there have been several notable people associated with Doubleday&Company: Alice Waters (founder of Napa Valley winery), Bob Dylan (co-founder/rapper at People’s Temple),and Jay Leno (comedian/ Tonight Show host). Newburgh is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The population was 5,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chemung County seat. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Newburgh were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. The first documented mention of Newburgh was in 1677 when General Jameson purchased an estate there from Sir William Johnson for £4 per acre. In 1702, George Washington passed through this area and noted that "the river is fordable here". By 1711, several plantations had been established around the bend of the river where it crossed over to Susquehanna County – one being called Great Meadows (later West Point). In 1814, after a fire destroyed most of the town center, Congress created a new township to be incorporated within Chemung County with 7 vote majorities instead of requiring two-thirds majority as prescribed by state law. The name "Newburgh" was chosen because it had been recommended by Alexander Hamilton as a place where business could take place without disturbance caused by neighboring townsfolk's religious fervor.ectorally based activities such as worshiping at local churches or attending public meetings were discouraged and limited to private residences until after 1830 when those services became available at sites such as Bethel Methodist Church and Cook Mansion (now known as the State Capitol Building). In 1825, construction began on nearby Mount Hope Cemetery which later became home to America's largest mason jar tombstone monument. During World War I munitions plants were built near Newburgh including Beech Grove Arsenal which produced mustard gas and other chemical weapons; Lake Mohawk Ammunition Plant which manufactured both artillery shells and machine guns; White Sands Ammunition Plant which produced TNT cartridges; and Northumberland Ammunition Factory which made rifles, pistols, grenades and artillery rounds using ammonium nitrate explosives before surrendered by Germany on 9/11/1941 during World War II. During World War II many residents along with their families fled into Canada due to bombing raids throughout Europe but many returned home during 1945 following victory over Japan brought about by United States atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Newburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Newburgh was Nicholas Bourke in 1786. His brother John Bourke also founded a small hamlet called White Plains on Otsego Lake and began to sell goods from his store there. In 1814, Nicholas Bourke's son Daniel founded what became known as the bourkeshire Hotel which still stands today and provides lodging for tourists visiting the area. In 1825, George Stephenson built a sawmill and gristmill near the current town line and started to produce lumber for local houses and businesses. The mill continued to operate until it burned down in 1872. The town of Newburgh was laid out by act of the State Legislature on December 12, 1830 following claims by residents that they had been wrongfully deprived of their right to vote by an earlier act passed in 1830 without their input or knowledge! The first post office opened in 1831 and remained open until 1907 when it was closed due to consolidation with other towns within Sullivan County. Like many small communities throughout America during this time period, Newburgh experienced a rapid growth rate due to its location close to major transportation hubs like Syracuse and Rochester as well as manufacturing plants such as the Stephenson Saw Mill & Machine Works located just outside of town along Route 9W (now I- hormont Boulevard). During this time period too much water pressure from these factories caused some streets within town - such as Main Street - to be renamed after nearby industrial icons like locomotives or carriages! 1st Lt Col George Armstrong Custer’s funeral procession passed through town January 25th 1865 finally ending American Civil War at Fort Erie
