Today, several other small-batch coffee businesses dot the cityscape - including Blue Bottle Coffee Co., which opened its second shop in downtown Manhattan last year; Ritual Coffee & tea at 111 Nassau Avenue; and Caffe Vita at 9 Elmira Plaza. New Rochelle, founded in 1798 by farmers, is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 7,632 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The namesake of the town is Nicholas de Rosnay (1581–1658), an Englishman who fought for the Dutch against Great Britain in 1624 and 1626. The Town of New Rochelle was first established on November 1, 1798 as a village on what is now Morris Street between Clinton and Water streets. On May 10th, 1800 it became a town under the name of "Rochester". On July 1st 1802 it changed its name to "New Rochelle" after becoming an incorporated city under state law. Under Mayor James Kapp (1861-1872) and City Manager Augustus Kelley (1904-1910), New Rochelle's famed Municipal Art Gallery attracted world fame for its illustrations and sculptures dating back to 1892 including works by Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse and Georges Braque. New Rochelle was founded in 1714 as a tiny hamlet on the eastern shore of Long Island by Pieter van der Donck and his family. The town slowly rose to become one of the largest and most influential settlements on the island, hosting a thriving agricultural economy and becoming known for its fine architecture and engineering feats. In 1854, New Rochelle was renamed after Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of Treasury. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history, including becoming an industrial center during World War II; experiencing a resurgence in recent years as a bedroom community for New York City; and now home to some of the wealthiest residents in all of New York State.

The town of New Rochelle, located in the Hudson Valley of New York, was one of the original towns on the frontier. The area that is now New Rochelle was first settled by Dutch farmers in 1624 and became a part of English Crown Colony of Ulster in 1664. In 1714, the French founded a fur trading post at Fort Christina near what is now Albany, New York. The British moved their military installation to Fort Orange nearby in 1722 following its capture from France. In 1786, John Jay set up a trading post at Jersualem (now Jericho) on the north side of Mohawk River as part of his efforts to open trade with what he saw as rich interior territories west of the Appalachian Mountains. On November 12, 1786, Jay negotiated a treaty with Chief Joseph Brant which ceded much land east of Jersualem for development into present-day New Rochelle and other villages within the boundaries laid out by Jay. New Rochelle's early history can be traced back to its location on an ancient Indian path extending from Enniskillen County through Westchester County and into Putnam and Dutchess Counties to crossed via Gananda Creek ontopresent-dayRochester’s southside before continuing northeastward along Route 9W under Ridgefield Hills Road past today’s White Plains Cemetery and across Route 10E along Cross Keys Boulevard to enter town limits at Roosevelt Avenue/Hudson Street. From here it was just a matter of walking or horseback riding until Revolutionary War times when ferries landing at Gravesend Ferry Landing brought goods upriver while also providing access to local markets for salt pork, flour bread and other supplies necessary for war effort. Today there are several small businesses clustered around central business district including: Banning Greeting Bakery/Hardware; Big Time Rugs; Brown Bros Hardware; Fountain Inn Chinese Restaurant; Ford’s Garage; Fresh Kills Market Inc.; Greenway Pharmacy; Hudspeth House Museum - historical home built by George Washington during his time as President (currently used as offices for Town Council); Italian restaurant “Papa Italy” since 1997 known locally as Local Joe's Pizza & Pasta - opened by Frank Sinatra Jr., CSN&Y star who entertained customers nightly at this spot from 1947-1982
