The New Rochelle Naval Shipyard was the first naval shipyard in the United States. It opened in 1885 and became a major center of naval shipbuilding. New Rochelle is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Westchester County. The community was founded by Dutch settlers in 1624 as a new place called Roemerdam and then named New Rochelle after Rochelle, England. The first white settler in what is now New Rochelle was Johannes de Vries who arrived in 1624 from Holland with his family. He bought 160 acres (65 ha) of land on the east side of Lake Ontario for $10 per acre. On May 5, 1625, Vries and his brothers Cornelis and Pieter signed a deed to purchase an additional 640 acres (240 ha). This area included present-day downtown New Rochelle and much of eastern Central Park which still forms part of the town borders today. In 1627, Vries married Cornelia van der Plaats who also came from Holland with him to America. She bore him six children: Johannes (1628–1693), Adriaen Jacobszoon (1630–1712), Hendrickje Swartwijk (1632–1701), Margrietje Krijnissen (1635–1715), Willem Callicott (1638/9 – 1711) and Saraatje Houtman (died young). In addition to these six children, Cornelia had two other children by her first marriage: Janneken van der Plaats bint Van den Brandt alias de Woutersenaar and Jacobus Prentissius Soetevelt alias Jansen van der Donckt or Sotervelt or Weertsvelt who were both born about 1580s in Zevenburgen near Rotterdam but died young before reaching adulthood. Cornelia's second husband Pieter de la Chapelle may have been fathered by her first husband too because he appears on several early documents as either one of Cornelia's five sons or one of her six sons-in-law listed under that name only when he later changed his surname to La Chapelle around 1650s during yet another legal dispute over succession to their farmland holdings in America following Cornelis' death some years earlier. He arrived back in Holland with his family aboard the ship "Zanger" on October 12th , 1600 from Amsterdam chartered by Hendrick Hudson as part of a relief expedition organized along religious lines to North America assist English Protestants fleeing persecution back home at the time under military command of General Oliver Cromwell's forces known as The Puritans . After spending several weeks ashore at Rhode Island before continuing on their journey up river they finally reached Albany late on December 8th . There they spent Christmas Day among friends including Governor Thomas Dongan and fellow passengers Robert Livingston and Jonathan Putnam prior then continued their journey northeast across Canada arriving safe at Plymouth Colony January 7th , 1621 after crossing over into what is now New Jersey . They left behind their families behind with little more than food for themselves and smallpox afflicted troops quartered among them along the way including De la Chapelle's brother-in-law Pierre du Pont l'Espinasse who also perished during that trip - all without leaving any survivors behind aside from those immediately stranded along the Canadian border where they managed to build some rudimentary shelter using branches & bark while awaiting better times ahead out there…All this happened less than two months after Europeans landed officially within our own continent! Dutch explorer Adrian Michaux explored this area further upriver further north sometime between November 1st - December 15th 1600 claiming discovery not actually made until well into next year even though his charts show otherwise……….It should be noted here that contemporary French fur traders such as Colbert had already discovered parts of North America northward beyond what Michaux found back home….. New Rochelle, located on the east side of Manhattan, is one of the oldest municipalities in New York. It was formed from a merger of two villages on the west side of Manhattan: Rector's Village and White Plains. The first permanent settler in what is now New Rochelle was Nicholas de Montresor, who purchased land in 1666. In 1792, when it became an incorporated town, New Rochelle had a population of 712 people. The growth of the city led to increased pressure on the town's resources, and by 1853 it had shrunk to 100 people. In 1865, as part of an effort to improve transportation within and between New York City and its rural counterparts, Mayor John Fenton built a railroad line through New Rochelle. The first train passed through town on October 15th 1865 – four days after it opened! By 1870, however, trains no longer came through town; instead they went to Mineola or Hicksville. In 1872–73 Mayor John Pappas convened a group of businessmen to explore ways to get more businesses into town for economic development purposes. They found that there were already too few businesses in town for them to be effective at developing it into a commercial center; they recommended that instead the business district be centered around Fifth Avenue and Park Row (now Irvington Road). This plan succeeded and within a few years new businesses were sprouting up all throughout downtown New Rochelle – including several banks which still operate today (e.g., First National Bank). The growth in crime rates during this time caused many businesses to relocate out of downtown onto Third Avenue or Park Row – but despite this progressivism-inspired revitalization effort little progress was made towards creating an ethnic minority community until after World War II when plans started being made for postwar development here specifically targeting Korean Americans/Americans rather than just general diversity goals because then “the Koreans really would have been integrated” according to historian Wesley Chun Kooiengunwuwongkon
