When New Rochelle, a small town in upstate New York, was founded in 1795, the first settlers were farmers who arrived with their families. A few years later, a group of men from Albany decided to move west and started a new settlement. They named the place after George Washington, who had recently been inaugurated as the first U.S. President. The name stuck and the town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1837 when it merged with nearby Rochelleville. The National Guard was activated on April 20th, 1898 following a request by Gov. Charles Evans Hughes of New York State as part of the Buffalo Soldier Bill which granted amnesty to all draft-dodgers living in that state at that time. At that time there were over 6500 soldiers serving in various states across the United States and Canada including around 350 troops stationed in New Rochelle. Because of its location within easy reach of both Albany and Buffalo, New Rochelle became an important garrison for these two cities during World War I and II due to their strategic location near Lake Ontario which made shipping difficult for Germany and Austria during those times. In 1945, following World War II’s conclusion, many American troops left for Japan leaving behind large stocks of munitions; this prompted Congress to create the Defense Appropriations Act which allocated $4 million towardsocating towards national guard gifts throughout 1948-1949! Since then there have been numerous changes to how national guard gifts are delivered and distributed – from being sent directly to military units stationed abroad through mail order companies such as Amazon (a recipient since 1949) or even through online platforms like Walmart (a recipient since 1997).
