New Rochelle, a town located in Rockland County, New York, was first settled in 1765 by Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor and his wife Jeanne d'Arc. The Montresors were Huguenot refugees who had fled France during the French Revolution. They arrived in what is now Rockland County and started a small farm near the present-day intersection of Route 9W and Main Street. After three years, they sold their land and relocated to what is now New Rochelle. The town name comes from an old English word meaning "new settlement." The early settlers were primarily farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. By 1810, however, there were also some whalers and fishermen living in the town. In 1837, New Rochelle became the county seat of Rockland County after it was moved from Sayville. The population reached 100 residents by 1840; however, due to immigration from Ireland and other parts of Europe during that decade, the population continued to grow until it peaked at around 220 in 1860. During World War II, New Rochelle played an important role as a military airfield serving the Allied forces throughout North America. After the war ended, many people left for various reasons – such as political or economic dissidents – but some remained in New Rochelle through various businesses that sprang up during its post-war boom period including publishing companies (including Doubleday), banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co.), law firms (Cavalier & Goodwin), insurance companies (AIG) and real estate developers (Homeserve). In recent decades, much of downtown New Rochelle has been redeveloped into mixed-use properties including office space and residences; however, several blocks of historic homes remain vacant or are used for storage or agricultural purposes.
