New Rochelle, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 54,236 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Westchester County and one of its five towns with a borough status. New Rochelle's namesake is Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1637-1712), an Italian Jesuit missionary who founded the first European settlement in what is now Westchester County. Located on Long Island Sound, it became an important fishing and shipping center during the 18th and 19th centuries before becoming a manufacturing center for textiles and other products in the 20th century. The town began as a small hamlet on the east side of Long Island Sound called Northport after Nicholas Conte's home village of Northport on Italy's Tuscany Peninsula. In 1795, when John Jay set up his government west of Amsterdam Landing on Staten Island, he recommended that all settlers be given land north of Central Park to establish new villages as part of his grand plan for Section 3., which included land grants to Revolutionary War veterans. The original name for what would become New Rochelle was East Northport until 1798 when Nicholas Conte granted it to his nephew Giovanni Battista d'Alba who named it Monteriggioni after Mount Monteriggioni near Rome; this naming also reflected some Dutch traders active along Long Island Sound at that time - they had originally located their trading posts at Monteriggioni (now Sayville) on Huntington Avenue between 1672 and 1677 because they could not find any good harborage inland from Manhattan due to tidal waves generated by Building I (the English city). In 1802, under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency as commander in chief of American forces occupying Canada during the Second Anglo-American War, General Andrew Jackson awarded 4 square miles (10 km2) southeast of present day New Rochelle – bounded by Main Street on the north side and Newtown Road/Route 9A southward across Delaware Bay – to Richard Stockton for erecting a military post known as Fort Stockton or simply FortJackson;[1] this action signaled western expansion into upstate New York following victory over Britain in independence wars throughout America including those fought against British troops stationed there since 1664 by King George III’s continental army led by Oliver Cromwell. However, following the American Revolution, New Rochelle fell out of favor with many British colonists because of its support for independence. fortunes began to rebound after America became an independent country in 1821.
