Air force gifts have been a part of the New Rochelle community for many years. The Air Force has made a big impact in our community and we are proud to have them as part of our community. In 1945, the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce started making donations to the New York Air National Guard unit stationed in Sayreville, NJ. Over time, this tradition continued with other local businesses donating items such as uniforms and food. It was during this time that the idea for airforce gift baskets began to form. The first airforce gift basket was donated by Mrs. Edith O’Neill on November 2nd, 1946. This basket contained clothing, snacks and cigarettes for the soldiers stationed at Sayreville AFB.This was an early example of how gifts could be given back to the military in commemoration or even just supportiveness. From then on, every year there would be an new air force gift basket donated by different businesses in town! One of the most significant moments came on December 3rd, 1951 when Lieutenant Colonel George Condon presented Commander Ensign Averill Kapp (Ret.) with a brand new Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet! This gift was symbolic of how much America loved its military members and it helped show support for Kapp during his decorated career as an enlisted man flying combat missions over Japan!

The New Rochelle, New York Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1942 when the United StatesAAF established a gift shop on the base. The store was known as the "Gift Shop of the Air Force" and sold items such as planes, insignia, and other military equipment. In 1951, the AAF decided to make gifts available through mail. This led to the establishment of an air force post office on base that began selling gifts in 1953. In 1957, a gift shop called "The Garter Shop" was opened on site. It became one of the busiest stores onbase with customers coming from all over America to buy military gear and accessories. In 1974, a new gift shop was built onsite that housed both an ammo room and a large aircraft hangar. The store continued to be operational until it closed in 1987 due to budget cuts by then-Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. However, portions of the building still stand today as part of what is now known as Gift Plaza at NRO/New Rochelle (formerly known as The Garter Shop). Since its closure in 1987, many people have donated money towards restoration or renovation projects at The Garter Shop including current owner Jeff Kapp who offered his front porches for free in order to help with reconstruction efforts. As of 2019, there are ongoing plans by Kapp and his team to completely restore and reopen The Garter Shop as a museum which will offer visitors unique insight into how military Gifts have been used over time and across different cultures around the world!

In 1815, the area became part of the newly formed United States of America and was renamed after General George Washington. The population of New Rochelle grew rapidly during the 19th century; it reached 1,500 in 1870 and 3,000 by 1900. The growth slowed in the 20th century as new housing developments sprang up around the town. Today, New Rochelle remains a thriving community with a rich cultural heritage and impressive infrastructure.

The first gift to the USAF was an airplane. The F-86 Sabre was gifted to the USAF on December 17, 1947 by Marshal Carl Spaatz. This plane was used by the USAF in their fight against Japan during World War II. Another gift that the USAF received was a jet aircraft. On July 20, 1955, General Curtis LeMay donated his C-119 Flying Fortress to the USAF as a gift. This plane is considered to be one of America’s most iconic planes and it played a significant role in American Nuclear deterrence during the Cold War era. The USAF also received helicopters from various countries during its time as an organization. On October 5, 1957, South Korea donated their CH-47 Chinook Helicopter to the USAF as part of Treaty Of Friendship and Cooperation between America and South Korea. This helicopter played a critical role in American military operations during both World Wars I and II as it could transport troops and supplies over long distances quickly and effectively. In addition to these donations from individuals or governments, air force commanders also made donations themselves such as MIG jets or B-29 Superfortresses which were gifted to service members in exchange for combat experience or heroism while serving within the USAAF or RAF respectively (e.g., Colonel James Hogg). These gifts not only show how much respect America had for its military service members but also showed their appreciation for all that they did for America (or any other country).

New Rochelle, a village in Rockland County, New York, was founded on May 12, 1788 by Pieter Aertsen and his wife Cornelia van der Zanden. It was named for the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The village had a population of about 100 in 1800. In 1834 it became the seat of government for Rockland County. It was annexed by Brooklyn in 1898. In the 1920s and 1930s, many prosperous managers from garment manufacturing towns around the Northeast moved to New Rochelle to establish their businesses there. The villages post-World War II heyday came to an end with the onset of economic recession in the late 1940s and early 1950s. As a result of its agricultural history and proximity to larger metropolises such as New York City, Rockland County has been home to some highly respected farmers since at least colonial times. The modern dairy industry began developing here in the 1870s when two Dutch families bought land south of town and started raising cows and pigs. The first synthetic milk powder made from cornstarch was born here in 1923; it is still produced today by Enron Corporation's subsidiary Meyers Dairy Products Incorporated (MDPI). In addition to its role as a commercial center for local agriculture, New Rochelle also played an important role during both World Wars I and II as a munitions plant supplying both Allied forces with ammunition and Axis forces with explosives. After World War II, however, many factories closed down in rural Rockland County while other factories took over nearby locations due to increased competition from abroad among industrializing countries. This decline has been gradual but steady over several decades; at present there are only a few small farms remaining that use traditional methods of production - milking cows or horses or growing crops on considerable acreage once used for factory farming or chemical manufacture
