In 1814, as part of efforts to consolidate all western lands taken from British colonies during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848), President James K. Polk transferred ownership of what are now Westchester County and Putnam County from Mexico to the United States through Executive Order No.— ironically—Mount Vernon became its site along with Arlington Heights (later called Arlington Village) in Arlington Heights Township on February 14th (). The population growth following World War II has resulted in significant development around Mt Vernon including: annexation by Yonkers; establishment as an elected township within Westchester County; establishment as a borough within Manhattan due to voting rights granted upon merger with other boroughs; designation as a national Historic District in 1987; designation as a city proper within New York City on November 8th (), making it one of five boroughsShareholdersinthecityofNewYorkCity
