Mount Vernon is a historic estate located at Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York. It was built between 1784 and 1787 by George Washington and his wife Martha Custis Washington for themselves and their six children. The estate includes the main house, Strawberry Plains, the Drury House (1786), Montpelier Farms (1788–90), Mount Vernon Chapel (1792), and four other buildings. In 1801-02 it was sold to Francis Scott Key who planned to turn it into a national cemetery but never accomplished this because he died before he could begin construction. In the Marine Corps there is a long and proud tradition of deploying Marines with great gifts. From small tokens of appreciation to beautiful pieces of jewelry, Marines have always been able to show their love for service through thoughtful gifts. Here are some of the most famous and beloved Marine gift traditions: The Christmas present exchange Since the beginning of the Marine Corps, Christmas has been a time for family and friends to come together and exchange gifts. The exchanging process usually starts with one person giving then another person receiving something specific in return. For example, during World War II, Marines would give each other cigarettes as presents. Today's Marines often exchange items such as clothes or electronics. Gifts that commemorate an event or individual within the Marine Corps are also popular among brothers and sisters in arms. The annual Guam-Marine Expeditionary Force (GMEF) deployment gift exchange This is a classic military tradition that dates back to World War II when marines would send parcels filled with food, clothing, ammunition and other items to their fellow servicemen on Guam and in Tinian National Park on Mariana Islands during deployments between 1944-1945. The Exchange occurrence took place every two years until 1984 when it was discontinued due to logistical difficulties caused by the war against Japan.
There is no one definitive answer to this question. However, some marines have deployed with either very large or small gifts. Some marines have even sent gifts that are both unique and thoughtful.
The town of Mount Vernon was founded in 1784 by George Washington and his family. The town quickly grew to become a major center for the fur trade, and it is today one of the most important historical sites in New York City. In addition to its importance as a cultural attraction, Mount Vernon also has many extant buildings and structures that are significant pieces of New York history. Mount Vernon was first settled by Native Americans in the area now known as western Pennsylvania. It was not until after George Washington's death in 1799 that the town began to grow rapidly. By 1814, Mount Vernon had reached its peak population size and began to develop into a major commercial center. By 1825, however, thetown had fallen victim to financial problems and declined further in popularity. However, it remained an important community until its destruction by fire in 1837. Despite these difficulties, Mount Vernon continued to be an important part of New York life during the late 19th century. In 1915, it became part of New York City through an act of Congress; since then, it has served as one of the city's most popular tourist destinations. Additionally, some extant buildings from this period have been preserved as part of efforts to revive Mount Vernon's economy and make it more accessible for visitors.
