The history of roasted coffee in Mount Vernon, New York goes back to 1811. At that time, the area was part of the Dutch colony of Holland and coffee beans were grown on the plantations. The first coffee house in Mount Vernon was opened in 1815 by Nicholas Biddle. In 1822, General James Wilkinson built a Coffee House on Market Street and roasted his own beans. In 1824, John Cushing started roasting coffee at his home on East Main Street and soon became known as the King of Coffee. By 1830, many other businesses had opened up around Mount Vernon and it became an important trade center for the region. By 1860, most of the original trees had been cut down and all that remained were some ruins. However, from 1870 until World War II, Mount Vernon continued to be a significant center for coffee Roasting with several companies opening up shop here including Dutchman Coffee Company (1872-1948), Swiss Coffee House (1874-1900), American Coffee House (1892-1982), and Brown & Williamson (1914-2006).
