The Air Force gift history in Mount Vernon, New York began on December 1, 1945 when the United States Air Force activated its first squadron at 159th Fighter Wing. The wing was stationed at McGuire AFB in Wilmington, Delaware and received its initial aircraft from the Boeing P-47 Thunderbolt. On July 15, 1948, the Air Forceactivated its second squadron at McGuire AFB with the acquisition of Republic F-84 Thunderchiefs. The wing was renamed 159th Fighter Squadron on October 3, 1948 and continued to fly the F-84 until it was transferred to Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina on August 1, 1959. That same year, On September 9th RAF Tempsford RAF Station England became a home for 158th Fighter Squadron which had beentempestuously acquired by USAF from RAF Coltishall during World War II. It flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters until it moved to Seymour Johnson AFB on August 1st 1959 where it operated Lockheed F-111C Stealthfighters until it was transferred to Eglin AFB Florida as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which ended in May 1961. In 1963 the Air National Guard joined Active Duty with Trumbull County Airport becoming an active duty station when Headquarters USAF activated thereon Camp Lemonnier near Naples FL under command of Seventh Air Forces having previously been located at Kelly Field TX since 1941 when Eighth Army advanced into central Florida.) In 1967 Headquarters USAF activated again Camp Lemonnier and bestowed new name: 269th Aerospace Defense Wing (ADW). Mount Vernon is a small town located in upstate New York. It was founded by General George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington, on April 14, 1792. The township of Mount Vernon was named after the estate which extended along the southern side of Westchester County from Ossining to White Plains. After the death of General Washington in 1800, his widow inherited the estate and renamed it Mount Vernon. The plantation house where President John Adams lived during the Revolution remains standing and is now open to visitors.

Mount Vernon is a historic home located at New York City, New York. It was built in 1792–93 by George Washington and his family as their presidential retreat and was used as a presidential palace from 1795 to 1800. The original Mount Vernon house was enlarged and extended between 1805 and 1809 by James K. Polk, Sr. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The estate of Mount Vernon extended for 6 miles (10 km) along the banks of the Potomac River, extending from the town of Alexandria on the north side to Georgetown on the south side. unusually large tract of land lay immediately adjacent to Georgetown, forming part of President Washington's private estate known as Mount Vernon Heights or "the Hill." Nearby were fields filled with tobacco and corn; some houses were set on high ground facing down upon these resources while others were built low around them for privacy. For many years after President Washington's death, his widow continued to live at Mount Vernon with her unmarried children until her death in 1830; then they moved into nine separate residences within earshot of each other but without access to one another's goods or services. In 1865, Mrs. Washington's son-in-law acquired all remaining property east of Maryland Avenue in Fairfax County and made it into a public park accessible only through an entrance near present day Arlington Cemetery which he named for his mother-in-law—now called Mount Vernon Park
