Mineola is a town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 12,509 at the 2010 census. Mineola is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mineola is located on the southern tip of Long Island. The first Europeans to visit Mineola were Dutch traders sailing from Amsterdam in 1624. In 1627, Captain John Smith discovered and named the bay after his hometown of Mineola, New York – now called Kingston-upon-Hudson – in what is now Westchester County. Minesville was settled by colonists from Ulster in 1718 and became a separate town in 1792. Mineola's earliest mills date back to 1812 when George Hauer started making flour for local businesses and for export to Albany and Philadelphia. By 1825 there were 10 mills operating aroundtown; these were supplemented by two more early 1800s machines between 1830 and 1840; one still remains operational today as a museum exhibit (www.mineolamusicmuseum.org). Mineola was first settled in the 1800s. It was originally named after the city of Mineola, New York. The town was renamed after Mayor John A. Mineola in 1904. Mineola became a borough in 1946 and is now part of the Bronx.
