The MND was also home to the Mineola Naval Air Station, which serviced American Airlines air traffic controllers during the day and served as a night airport for the country's nuclear submarines at night. Mineola, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,442 at the 2010 census. It is the largest municipality in Ulster County and the second-largest city in Westchester County after White Plains. The village of Mineola was incorporated on April 14, 1824 as part of the Town of Hempstead. On July 1, 1827, Mineola became a separate town when it amalgamated with neighboring Hempstead to form the new entity of Mineola–Hempstead. In 1873, Mineola annexed parts of East Hampton to create a new municipality; this annexation led to another name change for Mineola on December 1 that year when it joined with Southampton to form the new Village of Southampton-Mineola. On January 1st 2019,[1] Mineola became independent from Southampton-Mineola and reverted back to its original name: Mineola.

Mineola is a small town in central New York, near the Erie Canal. It was founded in 1795 by Elisha Cooke and his family as a rural community on the eastern edge of Canandaigua Lake. The name "Mineola" is derived from the word "muhileh," meaning "great place." Mineola was first developed as a farming community with farms covering more than 2,000 acres. In 1827, Mineola became one of the original towns in Orleans County, New York. The population of Mineola peaked at over 10,000 during World War II before slowly declining throughout the postwar period. However, recent population growth has seen Mineola become an important shopping and commercial center for the surrounding area. Mineola's rich history begins with its colonial roots. When France purchased Ontario County from the Indian nation of Onondaga in 1792, they named it Nouvelle-Orléans parish after their then-King Louis XVI of France. Upon becoming part of British America in 1796, Ottawa Parish became part of Albany County and was renamed Clinton Parish when Governor Tryon assigned Colonel James Clinton to lead an effort to establish roads and settlements through what is now northeast Ontario County. In 1797, Elisha Cooke moved his family to Canandaigua Lake and began developing land east of present-day Mineola into a new village called Prospect Hill. As development continued along Prospect Hill Road (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard), other settlers soon joined Cooke in developing this interconnected agricultural society that would eventually include over 2,000 acres (1 km2). With access to water and fertile soil at its disposal, Minesiola prospered as a rural community until American Revolutionary War hostilities interrupted its peaceful existence on September 6th 1800 when Manor House Farmstead burned down due to faulty wiring within Mrs. Manor's spinning wheel! With no permanent damage done however - mineolas quickly rebuilt - this event marks one of two instances where homes were destroyed within minutes or seconds during wartime conditions!
