Mineola, New York is a town in the towns of West Hempstead and East Meadow on Long Island. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. Mineola was incorporated as a village in 1892. In 1953, Mineola became an unincorporated community and then a Town in 1957. The Village of Mineola merged with the Town of West Hempstead on April 15, 2013 to form the new Borough of Mineola-West Hempstead. Mineola is located on the southern tip of the island of Islip and across the Sound from Great Neck. The first Europeans to visit Mineola were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their sailing vessel "Nuova Europa" in 1524. The town was laid out by Nicholas Gottschalk in 1792 when he purchased land east of what is now Main Street. Minesola became incorporated as a village in 1814. Mineola has since undergone several name changes, including Mineola Heights (1859-60), Mineola Beach (1875-76), and finally Mineola Township (1905). Mineola's earliest settlers were families who had moved from either Babylon or Kingston on Long Island during the 1600s for agricultural purposes; many of these early settlers are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mineola. In 1697 John Smith was granted 1,000 acres (4 square miles) along with two other grants to him by King James II for his efforts to found Jamestown on Long Island. Smith's grant included a right to build mills on the river that drained into Nassau Bay. The first mill built at Mineolaside may have been erected around 1698 by Israel Putnam Sr., one of Smith's descendants. By 1795 there were seven mills operating inMineolihamilton Village; these mills produced flour, woolen cloths and saltpeter for shipment to Europe and beyond. However it seems that only two-thirds of all textile production took place here during this time period due to technological advances at larger mills nearer Watertown and Yonkers which could produce more textiles per hour than minesolaners could produce using hand looms or power looms; moreover cotton Textile Manufacturing began expanding rapidly throughout North America during this time frame also! In 1814 however mineolaside residents petitioned for incorporation into Dutchess County as a result of continuous flooding caused by newly constructed falls associated with Hurricane Eva which devastated much of Long Island - particularly Sayville and Hempstead - between September 24th 1814 – October 8th 1814 . The request for incorporation was granted & within three years mineolaside had reached its current population size with over 640 residents! Today’s largest retailer & restaurant chain “Diners All American” traces its origins back to mainstay schooner “America” which sailed into port inMineolihamilton Village Harbor on November 3rd 1946 fresh off her trip from Japan & Catalina Island having unloaded over 4 million pounds ($27 million) worth of goods!
