Mineola is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,569. The town is named for Mineola Point on the Chenango River. Mines and mineralogy were early subjects of research here and many famous people were born or educated in Mineola. Some of them include: Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., James Buchanan Garfield, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Rosalynn Carter. The first permanent settler in Mineola was Nicholas Forbes who emigrated from Scotland in 1786. He founded a gristmill at what is now known as Middleburgh Road and named it after his home village of Porton Down near Bathurst on the Welsh border. In 1800 George Washington came through this area while visiting Albany to survey land grants for the Federal government that he would later sell to New Yorkers Benjamin Rush and Alexander Hamilton. When Washington inspected these grants he noted that there was "a very large tract of country lying between this city [Albany] and Fishkill... rich mines being found there". In 1802 David Noyes established an academy here with three buildings designed by architect Philip Hardwick including one which still stands today (the old High School). Noyes also became a successful photographer and published several books about it before dying at age 82 in 1892 from tuberculosis contracted while living in New York City; his wife remained active until her death in 1951 also from tuberculosis.) In 1825 Nicholas Biddle opened a grocery store at what is now Main Street while two years later Isaac Brock built a flour mill on what is now SR 9W just south of where Union Chapel stands today). Mineola, New York is a small town in central upstate New York. The population was 2,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mineola was incorporated as a town in 1872. Mineola is located just east of Rome on Route 9A and across the border from Utica. It is bordered by Mohawk Lake to the south, Rome to the west, and West Seneca Lake to the north. Mineola's first settler arrived in 1824 from Connecticut with his family. By 1830, there were six families living in Mineola: four Dutch farmers and two English men who had come overland from England as indentured servants. In 1837, mine proprietors Isaac Lapp and Salmon Peebles donated land for a public school system that would serve Mineola and surrounding villages as well as protect them against Indian attacks. The first school building was erected on what is now Main Street in 1838-39 by Lapp and Peebles; it served as a church until 1860 when it burned down due to termites eating through the roof! The townspeople built their own homes starting around 1840 out of logs they brought over from nearby Baldwinsville and other settlements while still living off tribes' hunting grounds (the ore bodies near present-day Rome were discovered during development). Many residents also farmed crops or raised livestock on their properties until about 1880 when electric lights became available for use in towns throughout upstate New York; this made agriculture more difficult to sustain without modern equipment which increased production costs associated with large scale production rather than smaller scale processing operations like those that earlier took place here in Mineola! Mineola's growth began early on as agricultural communities with churches, schools and stores dotting the landscape. By 1881, there were over 100 businesses in Minesiola with a payroll of $10,000 annually. In 1886, mine workers came ashore at Mineola Harbor to start picking up coal which would be used to power local mills until 1959 when an electric plant was built nearby that ended that tradition In 1915-16 during World War I Mineola supported U.S troops with food and clothing distribution as well as repairs to their military vehicles In 1951-52 mineshaft mining operations destroyed much of what remained of downtown Mineola so several blocks away from where he now stands a small park configured like an open air movie theater serves as a visitors center for today’s community
