Mineola, New York is the birthplace of artisan coffee. The first coffee shop in Mineola was established in 1892 by Nels and Magnus Peterson. It was a small, family-owned business that served only coffee. By 1912, the Petersons had opened their second store, which became known as the Magic Shop. In 1918, they bought out the previous owner’s share in the business and changed its name to The Coffee House. The Coffee House remained an independent business until it closed its doors in 1984. The first espresso machine was installed at The Coffee House in 1912. In 1924, Felice Boccioni decided to open his own café called Cafè delle Donne (later renamed Café della Scala). At Cafè delle Donne, Boccioni introduced Italian roast coffee into New York City and began to change how coffee was consumed throughout the city. He also became known for his innovative milk recipes. After Café della Scala closed in 1927, Boccioni moved his operations to a new building on West 23rd Street called La Cucina (later renamed La Terrazza). There he continued baking bread and creating delicious Italian waffles until his death in 1957. His legacy remains ongoing at La Cucina today as one of NYC’s most popular cafes.
Mineola is a village in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 9,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Long Island City/UMass Amherst Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mineola was first settled in 1785 by Loyalist refugees from New York City who were displaced during the American Revolution. The name "Mineola" originated from a Malaquis word meaning "a small stream running to a large pond." mineola-township The Village of Mineola was formed on November 1, 1887 when parts of the Town of Babylon were annexed to Mineola Township. Mineshaft Road and Mineola Pond Road followed respectively these routes until they were merged into Oneida Avenue in 1915. On July 16, 1993, Mineola voters approved an ordinance change which changed its name to Mineola Township (Effective January 1, 1994). On October 15th 2009 Mayor John Lindsay announced plans for a new shopping center and more than $100 million in development over 10 years with 3 million square feet planned for retail space alone including 150 restaurants and bars across 23 anchor stores as well as office space for businesses that would be located within the mall district including Macy's, Sears etc...the project is set to create 2 thousand jobs directly associated with it
