Mineola, New York is home to one of the United States Air Force's largest and most prestigious air forces. The Mineola-based Fifth Air Force is a unit of the Ninth Air Force, which is headquartered in Rome, New York. The Mineola-based 4th Bomb Wing has been a part of Eighth Air Force since its activation on 1 October 1942. As part of Seventh Air Force during World War II, the wing was responsible for bombing Japanese installations at Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. In addition to its duties as an air force unit, Mineola also contains two other military installations: Fort Drum and General Dynamics Missile Systems' factory complex on Old Forge Road. These installations have been used by both Army and Navy troops for various purposes including storage, training, and missile development. The history of the 5th AF begins with its activation on 1 October 1942 as part of Eighth Air Force under command of General Dwight D Eisenhower. The wing was constituted originally as 512th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 7 January 1941 at Rheinberg Airport in Germany when the Third Reich was invaded by Japan. It was redesignated 512th Bombardment Group on 15 February 1941 and activated at RAF Lakenheath in England that same day under Sixth Army operational control after German capitulation. The group became operational with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft assigned to it from 24 February 1941 until 17 September 1943 when all flying operations were transferred to American Airlines operating out of RAF Mildenhall until 9 March 1944 when they were reassigned back to Eighth Air Force effective 10 March 1944 following the end of World War II. Following the end of World War II & beginningof Cold War era; Fourth Bomber Command was established as a subordinate command within Ninth Air Forces effective 3 May 1946 consisting entirelyof Boeing B-29 Superfortresses operated from Minneapolis Municipal Airport near Minneapolis, Minnesota while FifteenthAirforce remained inactive at RAF Lakenheath untilactivated thereon 15 February 1951). Mineola is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 3,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-on-Hudson metropolitan area. Mineola has been called "The Jewel of the Hudson Valley" and has been designated as a Census Designated Place by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Mineola was first settled in 1785 by Loyalists from Ulster County who had fought for George Washington during the American Revolution. The community took its name from Mount Olivet which overlooks it on Ashtabula Bay. Minesotia (a word meaning "place where salt is mined") was so rich in silver that early Mineolan miners built ponds to collect water and used their engines to drive buckets down into the mines to bring back water for use in their homes. Mineola's economy changed with development of copper and other minerals nearby beginning in 18th century; this led to rise of Mineolan society culminating with incorporation as a town on April 2, 1867 by an act of Congress under the guidance of Mayor James Ewing Sr.. At that time, Mineola contained 586 residents and was considered one side street between Centerville (now Albany) to the south and neighboring townships of Cohoes, West Seneca Falls, Southold, Salamanca and Romeoville northward along Route 9W into what is now Monroe Township; while much smaller than today’s town limits having an area only slightly larger than its current Main Street footprint As coal prices plummeted following World War II there were efforts by Mineolasayers to revive their once prospering community but it proved too difficult as most mine operations closed during those years; however some others such as Allegany Coal Company reopened after being closed during Prohibition which caused increased demand for goods made from coal including textiles, shoeshine parlors etc.; however advancements in transportation have allowed many businesses located within walking distance or less than a mile away from local shopping malls such as Walmart or Target opened up shop over recent decades despite high joblessness rates among locals due to lack thereof access thereto not only through business closures but also because we are all dependent upon large employers like Walmart for our livelihoods outside our home communities….
