Mineola, New York is home to the Mineola Army Airfield and has been a support base for the United States Air Force for over sixty years. The Mineola AFB gift history began in World War II when Mineola was an auxiliary airfield used by the United StatesAAF Ninth Flying Division. In 1948, Mineola AFB was transferred to the USAF and became an operational unit of the Ninth Air Force. The 9th AF played a critical role in during Operation Overlord by providing cover for Allied bomber forces as they bombed German targets in Europe. In 1951, Mineola AFB was redesignated as Meade AFB and it remained an active USAF Base untilactivated in 1969. During its time as an active USAF Base, Meade AFB hosted numerous missions such as Operations Neptune’s Spear (1991), Desert Storm (1990-1991), Bosnia (1995), Kosovo (1998) and Iraqi Freedom (2003). It is also home to two Marine Corps units: 1st Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton and 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines at Quantico. The New York Air National Guard's 460th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Squadron Deployed a Christmas gift to Mineola, New York this year. The squadron's C-130J Hercules aircraft delivered a shipment of food, toys, and clothes to the community in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Mineola is a small town located in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,581 at the 2010 census. Mineola is part of the Long Island City–Midtown Manhattan area and is bordered by Oneida to the north, Westchester County to the east, and Suffolk County to the south. It is one of three towns on Long Island (along with Hicksville and Oyster Bay) that are not part of Brooklyn. The Town of Mineola was created on April 12, 1784 from parts of Hempstead and Farmingdale Townsships. The first settlers were Dutch farmers who bought land in present-day Mineola from the Mohawk Indians. Mineola was originally known as Nesbitts Point or Egg Harbor Township because a lighthouse stood there until 1852 when it was moved to its present site at East Hampton Boulevard and Main Street. In 1876 Mineola became an incorporated village under the name "Mineola." On October 15th 1917, Mineola's only school closed due to political correctness rules which required all public schools in Nassau County be named after women pioneers such as Martha Washington and Eleanor Roosevelt although neither woman ever lived in Minesolan Village proper; this policy continued into later years when most new female residents moved into nearby East Hampton Village or Westhampton Beach). A post office operated at Mineola from 1876-1892; it was renamed Peekskill in 1893 after Major Philo Cogan Peekskill (the original Postmaster) established a store there with his family’s help during their stay as missionaries for The Episcopal Church stationed along Long Island Sound during that year. In 1924 local developer Julius Goodman built one of America's first high-rise apartment buildings near where he now stands on Main Street - Building A – which housed some 4500 apartments before being knocked down by Hurricane Agnes in 1969 but replaced by anew development calledBuilding B which still stands today on what once been Building A's lot! After World War II mineolas' manufacturing base shifted towards plastics products such as plastic water jugs and soda cans but also towards construction materials such as cement and girders; many jobs here turned out for companies like Caterpillar Inc.; Phelps Dodge Corporation;; Con Edison Company;; International Harvester Company;; Carrier Corporation;; Empire State Development Authority.. Aftermarket parts company Goodyear opened up here in 1984 making it home to America's first Kwik Lube tire dealership serving eastern Long Islanders until 2001 when they relocated acrossstate to North Syracuse! Today much of what used to make up these businesses currently occupies space within Grocery Outlet Centers located throughout central Nassau county including those formerly located inside former International Harvester Company building on Lake Road just outside Garden City!
