When coffee first began to be grown in the area now known as Middletown, New York, it was a small town of only about 10,000 people. The coffee that we know today was first brewed and roasted here in the early 1800s. The land that is now Middletown was originally part of what is now Hartford County. In 1785, General George Washington purchased 1,500 acres in what is now Middletown from the Lenape Native Americans. This land would eventually become home to many of the largest coffee plantations in America. In 1824, Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded a small coffee plantation near present-day Middletown. Conte's beans quickly became well-known and popular throughout New England and parts of Canada. By 1830, he had built a large plantation complex that included several thousand acres of land and over 20 buildings including a printing press and an animal garage. By 1840, much of the surrounding countryside had been developed into a large city known as Hartford with over 100 miles of streets and 2 million residents. However, spite of this growth, Nicholas-Jacques Conte still managed to maintain his small but successful coffee plantation until his death in 1868. Over time various other families have taken control of the larger estates located around Middletown or within easy commuting distance for those living thereabouts. These families have continued to produce high quality beans until today when they are owned by one or more processors who roast them at their facilities on site using whole bean equipment and water brewing methods
