Middletown is located on the east side of the Erie Canal and north of I-87. The first settler in what became Middletown was John Morse in 1792. In 1811, Samuel Morse bought some land from John Morse's father and began to build a home there. He named his house "Morseville." By 1821, Samuel had moved his family to their current location and built a two-story brick home which still stands today on Main Street near where Route 8 intersects Route 2A. The town got its name from John's daughter Middlestown (maiden name unknown). In 1824, Aaron Burr moved to Middletown from Schenectady after being acquitted of killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel that year. Burr set up shop in an old tannery on High Street and started trading goods with local farmers. He also founded the first post office in Middletown – called Middleton – in 1825. In 1830, he sold his interest in the post office to James Kirtley and ran it as Kirtley Post Office until 1836 when it was merged into Cornell University's departmental mailbox service under the name "Kirtley Mail". Middlesex County was formed on April 14th 1765 from parts of Albany County by royal proclamation of George III as part of New York State’s effort to gain independence from Great Britain following her defeat at Saratoga Battlefield three years earlier; Middlesex included all or most of what are now Greene Countyincluding present day Middletown . The county seat was Cooperstown but due to lack of farmer support for courthouse construction between Cooperstown & Binghamton both seats were moved to Watertown (& later even more so Amherst) during Reconstruction period USA The new courthouse replaced an older one burned down by mob action while still under construction which served as temporary jail until Amherst could be Built As late as 1870 amherst had no city limits

The name is derived from "Middletown Township", part of which was included in the town of Middletown. The first permanent settler in what is now Middletown was Nicholas Dyckman and his family who came to the area in 1786. In 1817, John Fenton bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land between Newtown Creek and Buffalo Path on the northeast side of present-day Middletown for $10 per acre. He named it Hyde Park after his friend and fellow developer James H. Hyde. In 1825, Isaac Norris purchased 1,500 acres (600 ha) near what is now Park Avenue from Fenton for $15 per acre and settled it with his families. They called it North Hagley because there were no other dwellings within a mile or two of where they lived. In 1830–31, David Highsmith acquired 1,200 acres (600 ha) east of North Hagley from Norris for $25 per acre and started to develop it into a township. It was not until 1834 that he put down the first brick house on what is now Main Street in Middletown Township when he leased 30 lots to five families for $20 each plus expenses such as labor and mowing lawns on Sundays while their men worked at home on farms nearby
