Middletown, New York is a small town in upstate New York that was founded in 1792 by the Dutch colonists. The population of Middletown was 1,063 at the 2010 census. The town’s name comes from the Middelburg River, which runs through it. The first settler in what is now Middletown was Nicholas de Vries, who arrived in 1664. In 1792, John and Eleazar Wheelock founded a mill on the river and named their settlement after themselves – Middletown ( pronounced “migh-dit-tow”). The cotton gin boom of the 1800s brought new people to Middletown and its location made it an important center for production. It also served as a transportation hub for goods carried downriver to Syracuse and Buffalo. By 1836, when the Erie Canal was completed, Middletown had become one of the busiest towns along its route. During World War II, many businesses were destroyed or relocated to other locations during wartime rationing; however, some remain active today such as Hometown Hardware store and two schools – Central High School and Conklin Middle School – which serve as anchors for the town’s economy. Since then, there has been an increase in development within town limits with several new restaurants/cafes opening up as well as construction projects such as a new school building and addition to the old post office building. Middletown was founded by Pieter den Hout and others in 1676 as Northoldon on the east side of Lake Ontario. The name honor Colonel Jameson and his army who destroyed Fort Niagara in 1701 during the French and Indian War. Middletown took its name from Pieter's daughter, Middenborough (now Derby). In 1814, Middletown became part of newly formed Erie County; it remained an agricultural village until manufacturing began to grow there in the early 20th century. In 1920-21, when Rochester lost its monopoly on tool production within New York State to Schenectady-Troy Township, Middletown responded by annexing most of what had been Albany Rural District No. 2 (later renamed Seneca Falls) into its borders - thus becoming one of only two towns in New York with both rural districts and city blocks (the other being Yonkers). machinery production rapidly increased following World War II as war efforts led to an increase in demand for metal products such as aircraft parts and tanks; moreover, families moved out of farms into cities seeking work opportunities during peacetime. On October 22nd 1830 Gilbert Smith offered a grant of land south of Route 12 west of present day Route 149 so that a new town could be erected thereupon On November 15th 1830 Gilbert Smith offered 1 acre ($40) towards founding a Town Hall which would house all important governmental functions including elections etc... On February 21st 1831 Samuel Willett offered 3 acres ($120) for same purpose . Thereafter John Davenport offer'ed 4 acres (#240) ..... meetings were held monthly with John Doherty presiding.... Dimitry Sneathoffer delivered business between meetings .... Simon Bache delivered goods between meetings .... Jacob Riis also attended meetings while living nearby .......... George Washington Carver resided nearby ................. On March 29Th 1840 Nicholas de Groot donated 100 acres (@1 acre) northwest corner lot @2 miles long & 10 rods wide @$10 per year ...... This parcel later became known as Carver Park .......... Meeting minutes are still extant ... Meetings adjourned without order when Andrew Fuller announced he would not attend due to ill health....... Meeting minutes show that consent was obtained from subscribed townsmen before adjournment....... This suggests that Fuller did not actually leave town before notified everyone else he would not be attending On April 6 th 1840 Nicholas de Groot donated another 100 acres (@2 acres), this time located @4 miles NW corner lot @6 rods long & 8 rods wide @$15 per year..... This parcel later became known as Westchester Park

In 1898-99, Middletown was named one of America's "Ten Towns for Progress." This designation helped make Middletown an economic powerhouse as businesses grew here to produce items for export around the world. Middletown is home to two large shopping malls - One featuring over 350 stores and services and the other with over 100 retailers - both located near downtown Middletown.
