Coffee beans were imported from South America and Africa and it wasn't until the late 1800s that roasting techniques were perfected.
Massena is a small town in the Catskills of upstate New York, about 25 miles east of Rochester. The population was 1,645 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Massena was first inhabited by Algonquian and Iroquois peoples. The first European to visit Massena was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1499 when he landed on Long Island Sound to seek passage to India. In 1614, the Dutch founded a trading post here and named it Vlissingen after their ship Vlissingen which had been wrecked near this point two years earlier. By 1795, there were over 100 white settlers in Massena. During the American Revolution, Massena sided with Great Britain and suffered significant damage from Patriot cannon fire and siege artillery used by Washington's forces against British General John Burgoyne's army at Saratoga Heights on September 17th and 18th (the Battle of Saratoga). In 1815, during the Mexican–American War, American Forces burned down most of the Dutchtown settlement including its church and school while retreating from Mexico City; only three homes were left standing until they were restored in 1951 as part of a larger renovation project for the old Dutchtown Iron Works located just north of town near what is now called North Avenue Extension. That same year saw an influx of Irish refugees who had fled potato blight along Ireland's borderlands during that decade’s Potato Famine – many settling in what would become Actonown around nearby Westport Point naval base where they started businesses such as grocery stores and hotels before fleeing again during Prohibition era mass migration into northeastern New York state starting around 1920 via Route 9A from County Clare through Ulster County then through eastern Nassau County culminating at Lackawanna Junction (which later became Buffalo) across Lake Erie from northern Ontario Territory.) That migration provided new impetus for early industrial development in present-day Massena with numerous breweries soon opening up including Oneonta Brewing Company (founded 1865), Peekskill Brewery (founded 1870), Wappingers Falls Brewing Company (founded 1886), Seneca Lake Brewing Company (founded 1889), White Eagle Brewery (established 1896) among others providing beer products for local consumption or imported into New York State via canalboats or riverboats equipped with kegs capable of holding 10 gallons each which service ended when those boats were pulled out due to pollution control regulations following World War II drowning off Seneca Lake caused by landfill operations begun by Republic Steel Corporation shortly before its acquisition by Bethlehem Steel Corporation creating Republic Land & Development Co., Incorporated headquartered at 460 North Main Street Suite 1400 within Republic Land & Development’s parking lot on McCarty Boulevard inside Republic Land & Development’s office building adjacent to Interstate 490 within Doane Mall www.republiclandanddevelopmentcoincorporationusa.com
