Massena is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 10,035 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is likely derived from the Massaakiadge River which flows through it. The first white settlers in what is now Massena were Nicholas Astor and his family who arrived in 1795. In 1814, Captain John Jacob Astor purchased land from the Mohawk nation for $1 million. After purchasing additional land from the natives over time, he founded The Astorsland estates on Long Island Sound in 1824. In 1829, his son Augustus died unmarried and left most of his fortune to his nephew Jacob Astor IV who then divided it among his childrens and other relatives. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General George Buford surrendered at Saratoga Springs after a three-week siege that led to more than 100 casualties including 40 Americans killed and 58 wounded by Confederate forces commanded by Major General James Longstreet. Most of these events took place near where present day Route 9 stands between Asaphville and Saratoga Springs village square (now part of downtown Saratoga Springs). During World War II Massena served as an airfield for Army Air Forces bombers flying into New York City; however, there has never been an aerial combat engagement here during that conflict. On May 15th 1948 local residents voted overwhelmingly to annex part of Onondaga County to Syracuse so as not to secede from New York state due to concerns about economic depression seen throughout much of rural America at this time caused by high levels of industrial production in Buffalo and Cleveland while small towns such as Massena struggled with budget shortfalls necessitating job losses within their communities despite increased investment credits available through federal funding mechanisms like farm bill assistance which were providing sorely needed jobs across rural areas during this period.).
