Massapequa Park is a small village in Nassau County, New York, United States. It was originally part of the town of West Hempstead and became an independent municipality on July 1, 1879. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to the area were French Huguenots who arrived in 1664 and soon after built a trading post on what is now Massapequa Lake. In 1727 John Montresor founded Montresor Manor which later became part of West Hempstead Township. In 1839, during the American Civil War, General George Washington's army burned down the house of Senator Aaron Burr in retaliation for his role in organizing the Republican Party. In 1886, when Nassau County was created from portions of West Hempstead and Farmingdale townships, Massapequa Park became one of its original municipalities. The village had a population of 2,500 and consisted of just a few houses until 1907 when it annexed nearby Indian Hill Village. On September 12th 1943 Japanese Americans living in Cartersville were rounded up by U.S Forces during World War II and taken to concentration camps including Manzanar where they were forced to work on military installations and carry heavy loads into the woods for miles around
The first white people to live in the area now known as Massapequa Park were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624. The area was part of New Netherland until 17Township, Schuyler County, New York was formed on December 15, 1785 from parts of Albany and Westchester Counties. On February 14th, 1814, the town was renamed for General George Washington after his military victory at Monmouth Court House.
